LETTERMAN: -- but after the initial heat cloud, I just thought, well, I screwed up. So What? It's the academy awards, for God's sake. I'm happy I screwed it up. ROSE: Just a billion people. LETTERMAN: I'm damn proud. ROSE: Who the hell cares about a billion people? Feel free to make my case for me ...

Another RIP thread hijkacked.... No one's denying rights. I have the right to attend a funeral and stand up and say "He was a bastard." But it's rude. And that's just common sense. What Cope is doing IS stone-throwing. And you can pretty it up or blame Mr. Average for it, but it is. I mean...

John Stewart interviewing Letterman about the Oscars

Noise, let me explain why I think his Oscar show was a failure. I was a fan of Letterman's when he was doing his old show, which I thought was subvervise. His Oscar performance, and this is just my opinion, exposed the fact that he was not as subversive as he appeared. In front of that audience, he...

Well said, pophead. It's a thread for honoring the man. If people want a thread for throwing stones at the dead, they should start a new one.

I'm basing my claim that he was a good guy on the word of the people who did know him. They spoke of him in hushed tones, on and off the field. I didn't say he was a saint. And either way, what Cope posted was bullshit.

I guess now that whar is gone, I guess cope has taken over pissing on our posted condolences.

Kirby was a great player and a good guy. Slamming him for something he was acquitted of is one thing, but making fun of a dead man for having had glaucoma is mean-spirited bullshit.

David Letterman, until he hosted the Oscars for one show, had a spotless career as a highly regarded and original talk show host in the US. Then in one night of lame Oprah/Uma type jokes, his limitations were exposed. Has never been the same. Letterman was brilliant that night, and I won't ever und...

You know what, though? That Clooney speech was the classiest political speech I've maybe ever heard at the Oscars. He made his point without being obnoxious, and I was really proud of him. I think Stewart seems more lefty when the Bush administration is in power. But when he got the gig, he went aft...

If anything, I think the Oscars have gotten more credible in recent years. Crash may not have been my first choice for Best Picture, but it's by all accounts a very indie-styled film. Loaded with celebrities, certainly, but many of whom worked for way less than they usually do (you can thank Don Ch...

Crash winning wasn't surprising at all. I think it's a good, but deeply flawed film, but it's exactly the kind of film the Academy likes to award. It's got pathos-a-plenty, it (sort of) tackles a hard issue that everyone in Hollywood agrees about (just in case you didn't know, racism is actually ba...

That's all I was trying to say. In the 60's and 70s, when the Dems ran the south, they got the most money from Big T. Now the GOP runs the south, and they probably get the most money from Big T. Big T is the devil, and the people who take his money are political whores. Which is pretty much all of t...

No, you're right. It's ridiculous. Except right when you're smoking, during which time the nicotine fools you into thinking you're a complete f-ing genius. I'm not arguing with you, but it's an addiction, like any other, and I have a lot of sympathy for anyone trying to get free from anything they'r...

It's beautiful music. You'll love the show. It's like Gershwin meets Bartok. And when I say it's not essential, I mean that if it didn't exist, Costello would still be as high in my esteem as ever. Whereas if TYM, Blood & Chocolate, or Trust didn't exist, he'd be less impressive to me. Il Sogno ...

Yeah I quit smoking today. I hope it's going to last. Me too. I threw away half a pack of Nat Sherman's last night. What I used to do every now and then was becoming a several times a day habit. So that's it. No more, not ever. Good luck to you, EH. Good for you for taking the plunge, too. In all f...

I think Il Sogno is really beautiful, and I'm glad I own it.

But it's not essential.
