Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

A question : would you be more ready to download illegally if a single CD cost 30GBP ? No, but I'd buy fewer records. That translates to $45AUD. When I first started buying CDs at the age of eight or nine and I had to save up several months pocket money to afford one, they cost about $30AUD. If the...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

What about buying a second hand LP? Is that legal? Of course. Presumably, the LP was originally paid for at a record store, with profits going back to the artist and label, then when the owner of the LP grew tired with the album, decided to sell it, which was perfectly within his moral and legal ri...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

A interesting round-up of the usual cliches, old and new, about Elvis. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/rockandpopmusic/8933197/Elvis-Costello-a-troubled-troubadour.html#disqus_thread Crimey, that's a bit obnoxious. If you were reading that unawares, you'd think Costello was boycotting the ...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

On the bootlegging question, I don't think there's any real moral quandry there - if something isn't available commercially, you're not doing anyone out of their just income by distributing it. However, if someone were to sell a bootleg, I'd look askance on that, as it then becomes someone making a ...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

And what if you consider let your reader decide how much they want to pay on your book/music/whatever (Radiohead? Anyone?)? That's a straw man example. By the time Radiohead did that, they had millions of fans who had been buying their records for years and had a loyalty to their brand. They had th...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

I will say that, while I don't disagree, I was arguing during the rise of Napster that what the music industry needed to do was lower CD prices or they would lose a generation. There was a sweet spot that was closer to 10 dollars than 20, and they were inching up rather than down. By the time the i...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

How many music fans do you know who only have downloaded files? A disturbing number actually. I actually spoke to a music fan not too longer ago, who has aspirations to be a professional musician, who was irritated at being unable to find a copy of a record online illegally. When I suggested that t...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.

Prices are set by the record label. Unless the artist makes a particular stipulation about a unit price before licensing the recording to the label to be distributed, they really have no control over the final price. Or sometime about a record being released period - just ask Tim McGraw about his th...

Re: Your LEAST favorite Elvis song and why

'Sulphur' sounds like a masterpiece once they have finished Sulphur is a masterpiece. The songs I gravitate towards the least probably have much to do with production as song content. I rarely listen to most of Punch the Clock and Goodbye Cruel World, but hearing some of those songs in an acoustic ...

Maybe not on disc but live Radio Sweetheart and God's Comic fill me with dread. Could be the monologues which don't appear to have changed much but I cringe with the lines "if you've ever felt like dressing up in satin and lace ....." Hey! They're two of my favourite live tunes, especiall...
