Re: "Goodbye Cruel World" Redux
Just gave this album a full listen for the first time in a while and found this thread. My thoughts: I would disagree with anyone that calls this a terrible album. It's not that; its songs are, for the most part, well written. Some are excellent. Some are timeless. The album, as it is very well docu...

Re: So It Goes 1977 - EC's appearances: An Appeal
I'm not sure what I feel about the different attributions of the date, but I will say that the "So It Goes" recording of No Dancing is about the best damn thing I've ever heard.

Re: Recently viewed films
I watched "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop" on Netflix streaming last night. I grew up watching Conan, and I also went to see him on the live tour around which the documentary centers, so I'm prone to being a bit biased. But I really thought it was a documentary done very well. It does a fantasti...

Re: Fallon and Armisen Imitate EC
I would guess that the Costello impressions of both Armisen and Fallon are pretty spot-on to those unlike us that don't spend as much time as we do listening to his music and analyzing every note on every album. I thought Armisen's was decent. It's a caricature, for sure, but most SNL impressions ar...

Yeah, love this song - the singing, playing and sound of the recording. Glad to hear about you young Elvis fans - as ever, I'm curious as to what got you into Elvis so long after his original burst of fame. I was born in '88. My dad makes music for a living so there was always music (and good music...

Re: Battered Old Bird
This is one of my all-time favorite Elvis songs. Whether or not you connect with the song—it just so happens that I do—I don't think it can be argued that it's one of his most passionate recorded vocals. It's stunningly powerful. Beautiful, tragic ... all of the above. I'm young and didn't discover ...

Re: North
I think many of these songs will find their way into more repertoires as years go on, though I'm surprised they haven't yet. Sadly the style of music that North was about has lost so much of its grip in any sort of mainstream appeal, and artists like Buble and even Tony Bennett in his age still seem...

Re: Build my classical collection
A few years ago I was given one of the best gifts ever bestowed upon me: A 10CD box set of the complete choir works of Felix Mendelssohn. I took a specific interest in Romantic music early on when I was studying music in high school and never let go, and I connected with Mendelssohn above others for...

Been a nice year for American Comedy- Midnight in Paris, The Descendents, and now Young Adult. I really enjoyed this movie. Loved how it subtly, and not so subtly, explodes those old myths of our youth that high school was the best time, that we can become better selves, that small town life is red...

What's guilty about '21?' It's a fantastic album. Great production, quality songwriting, and Adele not only has an unbelievable voice, but she knows how to use it unbelievably well. I'm not sure if I'd choose it as my personal favorite album of the year, but I'm not seeing any way it doesn't win tha...

I must also add that the attached performance of "Veronica" is just brilliant. The band behind him is an incredible crew, and Elvis is in pure form. Like always, he has full control over the audience, even though the audience in that case was a live television audience sitting at home past...

That performance of "Let Him Dangle" was spectacular. I agree with those that they've never heard it better. I know I haven't. One thing that stands out to me in that performance is the rhythm guitar of G.E. Smith. I've always held him in high regard, and his accents—especially throughout ...

I need holiday music suggestions. Yep, I'm a radical, "happy holiday-er"! Take that, Bible belt! On behalf of the Bible Belt, you're forgiven. :) Of course, many of the people here and south of here would be terrified if I were speaking for them. I'm just as out of place as any visitor. A...

I would recommend The Muppets to anyone. It's the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time. Several of the songs new to the movie (if not all of the songs) were written by Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords, and they're great songs. He's a very clever songwriter, and one perfect for this...

I'm reserving judgment on this whole Braun thing. He (and anyone that tests positive) deserves the benefit of the doubt, a luxury that a few renegades took away from anyone else that may make a mistake. I work as a sportswriter covering college sports, and an athlete I covered tested positive for a ...

Otis, love that Prince song. Anything off of Sign O The Times works for me. Wardo, it has been a long time. It's true. Good to see your name, too. Invisible Pole, it's nice of you to ask. Can't explain why I hear it, but I do:
My Morning Jacket — Battered Old Bird
Not sure if Jim James's voice is low enough for it. He has a high voice. I've always thought this song to be criminally underrated. One of my favorites.

Re: Cover Versions Of Elvis Songs You'd Like To Hear
In terms of current artists who could promote Elvis's songs to a wider audience, I think Michael Buble would be the man to cover Impatience and A Voice In The Dark. Motel Matches should be a standard ballad - everyone should be covering it. I can also imagine Adele singing Little Triggers. Nx I'd l...

"Page One- Inside the NY Times"- turns out the much ballyhooed death of print media may not be so fast approaching. At least that is how this wonderful and insightful documentary makes me feel. That and the dynamic, lucid advocacy of one, David Carr. He is the hero of this film and a 'sup...

I'd love to hear Beck sing Watching the Detectives. Sounds like his kind of song.
Two Elvis songs strike me as songs that would be great for Franz Ferdinand: Mystery Dance and Senior Service.

Definitely wouldn't mind seeing this tour again. And it's in a time of year where I can afford (at least time-wise) to drive a few hours. Florida's too far, just. Keeping my fingers crossed as more dates trickle in.

Re: Your LEAST favorite Elvis song and why
Love Went Mad is a bit grating. Knew this one was going to come up. It's actually one of my favorite songs on Punch the Clock. The verses are a bit too vogue-ish but that chorus will stay in my head all day. Another brilliant piece in an endless list of Steve Nieve playing brings it to life for me,...
