Re: Tonight's the night for Storm & Perfectblue

Evlis & Steve play Tokyo tonight and tomorrow. http://smash-jpn.com/elviscostello.html "and the new Costello world is developed" - couldn't have said it any better myself. Elvis never "develops" anything. Like all beautiful, living things, his world, simply, grows. :D

And while I'm at it, the melodies on North are twisting, turning, and truly origiinal, and gain ground with every listen.

Cope, definitely give TJL a re-listen. Sad Burlesque, The Birds will still be Singing, among others, have wonderful melodies, among his best.

I stand by my original post. This album will be perceived as a classic years from now. Unlike PFM and TJL, which I also adore, but feel to a certain extent that they were calculated experiments in style, this album comes purely from the heart. These songs had to be written. I truly believe it will g...

North is a Masterpiece

North is a masterpiece. End of story. If Elvis never released another "rockin rythym" record that would be fine with me.

This record is a rebirth for Elvis. It is the "Nebraska" of the new millenium, only better.

Guaranteed to whittle his fan base down to the devoted few though.

Definitely PTC...

WIWC has some great moments, but the middle of the record is mundane.

Of course my comments are couched in the fact that I've just listened to EC's latest masterpiece "North" for the hundreth time.

I think I remember reading that Elvis still drinks wine, but no other forms of alcohol. That's like saying "I only do a certain grade of heroin". BTW - Cows are Vegans too, aren't they? And pigs if I'm not mistaken. The thing I want to know is, why is E a Vegamite? Is it for animalitarian...

I agree with the majority, so far. When It Sings.

I've been listening to the album non-stop for 2 days, but when I turn it off and try to recall it in my mind, for some reason the only thing that comes to mind is "The Favorite Hour". Am I nuts?

Innocent Man said: 1980s: I first heard Elvis during the "Punch the Clock" era and proceeded to buy every album before it in a three-week period of time so I am limited in my choices. I moved from boy to man during this period and found that my smoldering intensity was effective in drawing...

After about 5 listens, I'd have to say that I anticipate this being another classic EC album. The first 3 songs, which upon first listening, appeared to be trying, have suddenly caught me by surprise. This is a wonderful time to be a fan. It's like putting Imperial Bedroom, or Beatles White on for t...

Yeah, I forgot to mention that the alternate version of "Every Day I Write The Book" is in no way a 'rockabilly' version. Yeah, I know, I just couldn't put my finger on it when EC had said Merseybeat. I just pulled Rackabilly out of my ass, and like all things that originate from there, i...

Not a fan of RS either, but having not heard the album yet (till tommorow) I must say it sounds fairly accurate based on the summation of all I've heard from various reviews, including those on this board, which I consider the most important.

I think I answered my own question.

"I'm giving you a longing look"

"What do you get when you fall in love?"

Although, I swear that there is a famous jingle with the same melody.

What a great message board. I'm having a great exchange with myself!

Noise - I know you must know what I'm talking about. That "I'm giving you a longing look" part in the demo version. That is so derivative of something I can't put my finger on. Can you place it?

Everyday: PTC Version Vs. Rockabilly Version

It seems to me that there is a certain degree of animosity towards PTC, including the poppy Everyday I Write the Book. I personally think it is a perfect pop song. The original rockabilly version (for lack of a better word), is ok, but I think the melody during "I'm giving you a longing look&qu...

This is a bit unfair. It's like comparing Meet the Beatles to Beatles White, or Boy to Achtung Baby, etc etc. Of course KOA is a better album. Elvis had honed his talents to perfection, matured as an artist. I'll take King, but it's literally men against boys here.

I saw Lost today. Understated, almost to a fault. I never could quite figure out the general disenchantment of the two characters. Perhaps that was the intention. Overall, I enjoyed it, but wasn't quite blown away. Though I have fallen in love with Scarlett Johnson, whom I didn't recognize from &quo...

I bought all three on friday. I've only listened to Trust. I must say, I'm a little let down. Whereas the outtakes of Imperial Bedroom feature versions of songs that are very different from the album cuts; lyrics, melody, rythym, etc, the takes on Trust seem to only be stripped down versions of the ...

IMO, GCW gets extremely unfair treatment. At the time, people were still waiting for the next Imperial Bedroom. People were a little startled by Punch the Clock, which IMHO, was great. By the time GCW came out they thought EC had lost it. "Who does a duet with Daryll Hall and survives?". E...

That part you are referring to noise is especially "smashing". I really can't understand why, even though he might not have thought that the song succeeded as a whole, he didn't at least rip that part out for use in another song. That melody could pretty much stand on it's own as the bedro...
