I was just telling someone the same thing last night BWAP. I've seen him twice, the first time being about 10 years ago and I enjoyed it much more that time.

Very well stated Christopher. There's a shop here in Durham called 'Books Do Decorate a Room', a sentiment that neatly sums up my feelings about having them around.

I've posted before that this is probably my favorite EC song. I love the tune, the lyrics, and the performance.

Re: New Gig Thread

Caught the Nelson, Mellencamp, Dylan show last night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Great atmosphere and a perfect evening for this kind of show, although the $9 beers dampened my spirits a bit. Nelson was great, as always, cramming 20 songs into 60 minutes. He was in fine voice and playing well...

I also got this yesterday and generally agree with Blue. In fact, 'You're So Vain' has a pretty poor vocal performance IMHO, but a lot of it sounds fantastic.

I've also been a big fan since the Soviet Kitsch days. A bit of an acquired taste, but a singular talent. Haven't heard the new one yet.

Re: The Open/Tom Watson

It was a great performance, especially as it was wire to 'almost' wire. And with Tiger out of the picture on the weekend, I'm sure the broadcasting world was pleased to have a story to follow. Funny, I used to root against Watson in his epic duels with Jack, but found myself pulling hard for him thi...

Re: books, books, books

I started with having read only a paltry 30 books on 'The List' as of April '08 and just recorded my 100th! Seriously, the list has really kicked my dormant reading gene into overdrive this year! Recent: Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West. One is New York, one is Hollywood...

Virtually all of 'Man Out of Time' qualifies on my list of best lyrics, but especially: There's a tuppeny hapenny millionaire Looking for a fourpenny one With a tight grip on the short hairs Of the public imagination But for his private wife and kids somehow Real life becomes a rumour Days of dutch ...

Re: Elvis Costello and the Sugarcanes, Cary NC, 14 June '09

A very enjoyable show and a great audience in Cary tonight. Not a single call-out for 'rock and roll' and the vast majority did not leave early. Several standing ovations, including for some of the new material. Elvis' voice was rough, but not bad in any way. He didn't shy away from any of the notes...

It would be very sad if Elvis, who is now in his 50s, came out and did the hackneyed 'angry young man' thing like it was 1979. Give me a fucking break.
