While on the subject of Frank Skinner, his spoof on the Darkness at the end of the show was embarrassing.

Here are some pictures, courtesy of the super soaraway Sun newspaper.

No one mentioned that you had to sit through two cringy interviews with d-list celebs that I've never heard of (I DON'T WATCH SOAPS!!) before EC came on.
Did anyone spot Skinner on Saturday? And the member of the 'Elvis Costello army' in the bar afterwards who would rather have him unhappy is a total tosser.

Otis, this is probably the made-up bit, Skinner trying a provocative question but making out that it wasn't him who thought of it!

The clips were good but the interview was hardly revelatory, and it got very tedious with FS banging on about tigers and Blaine.

What was quite interesting was when Elvis stated that he had a pretty good idea of what his next 5 albums would be, but declined to elaborate.

He also seemed to avoid the question on future plans, other than the remainder of the European tour.

It wasn't inspiring was it? The beard when he was singing "Georgia" was ridiculous wasn't it? I thought the Frank Bough bit was funny although I thought there might be a few jokes about Frank Bough and his lines...

The studio audience didn't exactly go wild when Frank said Elvis was on the show did they?! Did anyone on the board go to the taping?

I don't know about the David Blaine thing - after all at the time he denied knowledge about watching Pap Idol didn't he?

He hasn't really been in the country much and I doubt if his priority will be to watch the London news (which is primarily where the Blaine thing is reported I assume) or read the tabloids. I'm not sure what the broadsheets report regarding Blaine so I believe Elvis.

Did anyone ACTUALLY see Frank Skinner in the bar after the Festival Hall show? When he started about the Elvis army I thought he was going to mention all of us beautiful people outside.

Incidentally, I love Frank Skinner as a stand up but his opening monologue was cringeworthy.
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

Subject: Elvis touches Frank Skinner's 'old fella'
To: COSTELLO-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM

So there I am last night watching ITV1's excellent 'Family' - a subtle
gangster drama series which makes 'The Sopranos' look like the slick,
knowing cack that it is - when a trailer for the evening's 'Frank
Skinner
Show' appears during an advertising break. For reasons best known to
himself, Frank is rigged out in full lurid 70s pop star spandex with
tight
pink leggings and prominent posing pouch. Standing alongside him in
somewhat more sombre attire and doing his best to supress a schoolboy
snigger is one Elvis Costello. The gag is that during Frank's spiel, EC
recognises the need for modesty and reaches a hand across to cover
Frank's,
er, package. And cover it he did - quite a moment for Mr Skinner who,
you
might recall, once unnerved EC with the accuracy of a Costello
impersonation to the extent that Elvis was heard to wonder what Frank
had
been up to in front of the bedroom mirror during his younger days.

(Incidentally, I haven't slept for four nights due to a painful ear
infection, so I had to check with my wife that I hadn't hallucinated
any of
the above. Apparently it really did happen.)

Anyway, on to the show. Sadly, there was no live musical contribution
from
Elvis but they did show several great archive clips. One featured EC
sporting a dreadful comedy Irishman beard which made his 1991 effort
look
the epitome of cool (I think this was taken from the 1985 BBC2 Review
show
where El and his dad performed 'Georgia On My Mind'). Even better - and
one
which I hadn't seen before - was a 1984 breakfast TV clip with EC
pouring
heart and soul into a solo 'Peace In Our Time' while the blatantly
disinterested presenter Frank Bough rummages around in his paperwork
(presumably searching for his cocaine dealer's phone number). The
interview
with Skinner was amiable but pretty inconsequential, though EC did
respond
to a question about what he intends to do next by claiming that he
already
knows what his next five albums will be. He also mentioned being
offered
his own Saturday night prime time TV show after the Letterman guest
presenter gig earlier this year ("I took a couple of meetings about it,
but
they all talk rubbish...").

For UK listers who missed this, you can catch a repeat on ITV1 in the
early
hours of this coming Sunday morning (1am). Not sure whether they'll
screen
that trailer again, though!

DaveE writes-

For those who may not have seen this, Costello appeared on The Frank
Skinner Show last night (13th) A few items of interest.

1. EC said that he knew what his next 5 album releases are going to be
but
when pushed by Skinner for more info Costello explained that he had
ideas
as to which kind of records he would like to make but that there was
always
a chance that he might change his mind.

2. After his guest appearance hosting David Letterman, EC was
approached
regarding the possibility of having his own chat show in the USA.
Costello
suggested that there was not much chance of that ever happening.

3. Costello does not know who David Blaine is. Skinner quizzed EC
about
Blaine's London In A Box stunt but EC was dumbfounded by this line of
enquiry and genuinely thought that Skinner was making the story up. "I
don't watch television" EC replied by way of an explanation.

4. Skinner, a big fan, said at the interview's conclusion that "North"
was
an "interesting" album which roughly translates as "I think it's a pile
of
pretentious bollocks" (Not a view that I share incidentally.)

5. Skinner, somewhat predictably, played the embarrassment card by
dipping
into the TV archives to show some fascinating clips of EC from various
parts of the man's career. These included a performance of "Peace In
Our
Time" from 84 in which the show's presenter, the mighty Frank Bough,
was
seen indifferently reading pieces of paper as Costello sat next to him
performing the song.

Also, there was an amazing snippet of EC from god-knows-when that I
have no
previous recollection of. A fairly youthful Elvis, complete with
proverbial horn-rims but with his hair piled high in a kind of 70's
perm
and a shaggy beard that looked as if it had been borrowed from a member
of
The Dubliners, performing, I believe, "Georgia" and backed by what
sounded
like the BBC Orchestra. Where does this come from?? Did he not, along
with his old man, take part in some TV tribute to Joe Loss back in the
80's/90's cos if so, it might be from that.

As for "the look", we are not talking "Mighty Like A Rose" here but
some
curious hybrid prototype version of "the beard years" that EC may have
been
forced to suffer en route to his chosen image.

Let's hope that the proposed DVD release next year includes gems such
as
these cos they deserve to be seen

Our man has mentioned recently in interview that he is one of the few recording artists with no DVD release. He suggested that instead of a simple hits package there may be an opportunity to include 'extras' from TV appearances etc. Possibly for release next year, I think.

The thing that made that beard so funny, was that it was with gelled short hair, so not like the untamed MLAR Elv, more like the Trust Elvis with a baboon swinging 'pon his chin.
