***WARNING*** Awful PC Virus During Mediafire Download
While dl'ing the excellent sounding North Sea Jazz "fake flac" files, I picked up a really nasty virus on my PC. None of my applications, including internet, are useable. Has something to do with "Antivir Solution Pro" which I'm told I have to purchase every time I try to run an application. I can't even use System Restore because that .exe file is corrupted.
Not happy here.
I may have picked this up from one of the numerous pop-ups that accompany each mediafire download. The music files themselves are fine. Admittedly, I have pretty poor virus protection on my PC.
So be careful. I'm off to my computer fix-it guy tomorrow but it doesn't look good. SHIT!

After a little googling, I suspect that "Antivir Solution Pro" is the problem, not the solution.docinwestchester wrote:...Has something to do with "Antivir Solution Pro" which I'm told I have to purchase every time I try to run an application.

Clearly. I called their 800 number, but guess what? Not in service.EarlManchester wrote:After a little googling, I suspect that "Antivir Solution Pro" is the problem, not the solution.docinwestchester wrote:...Has something to do with "Antivir Solution Pro" which I'm told I have to purchase every time I try to run an application.
What a scam! I'd buy the damn thing if it frees up my applications, but I'm not sure that'll do it. It can't get much worse, I suppose. What do you think?

Don't buy it. It's the virus.docinwestchester wrote:EarlManchester wrote: Clearly. I called their 800 number, but guess what? Not in service.

I rebooted in safe mode with networking and was able to download what appears to be a legitimate program to remove this f*ing problem. Right now I'm doing a full scan with PC Tools "Spyware Doctor". It's gonna take a while, but I'm hoping this program works as advertised.
This was useful:

Problem solved w/out any software: Restart in safe mode, then use System Restore. Done deal.

Glad you got a solution to that nasty vile net-thang. Happened to my daughter on her 'protected' lappie 2 weeks ago-ish - nice lappie helpline guy talked her through a solution over her 'phone (she got 'it' when downloading streaming films ...).
Will remember hopefully your 'safe mode-restore' tip ...
I confess I never download streaming stuff or even torrenty-things anymore ...

I have invested in a anti-virus programme. My Norton anti-virus programme recognised it and blocked it.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

My PC became so slow whilst downloading "Blame It on Cain" that I stopped it. I can see there may still be residual problems, could anyone kindly put it on dime please ? Like doc, I've tended to use minimal PC protection after 2 bad Norton experiences so I'm reluctant to try and download from mediafire again

i paid those assholes NORTON for five years for the anti virus they offer always renewing for $45 additional yearly the initial program i had purchased. until the day i got a bad virus and those morons could NOT assist!!! they tried to charge me $100 to help which was the only thing they did correctly...CHARGING ME!!! when they could not resolve, i found out from my local cable company that they also offer the protection for FREE that i was paying norton yearly to keep me protected. and they are much more helpfiul AND knowledgable when i do have small problems. yes, sad to say, it always seems these music downloads are the cause. we should go back to trading in the mail everyone!!!

File sharing is clearly a double edged sword. I love the access to so much great music, especially with torrents, but there is definitely a risk to your computer and your sanity when something like this happens.bronxapostle wrote:i paid those assholes NORTON for five years for the anti virus they offer always renewing for $45 additional yearly the initial program i had purchased. until the day i got a bad virus and those morons could NOT assist!!! they tried to charge me $100 to help which was the only thing they did correctly...CHARGING ME!!! when they could not resolve, i found out from my local cable company that they also offer the protection for FREE that i was paying norton yearly to keep me protected. and they are much more helpfiul AND knowledgable when i do have small problems. yes, sad to say, it always seems these music downloads are the cause. we should go back to trading in the mail everyone!!!
I'm done with Mediafire. Dime has been great and I'll continue to use it.

And that goes for me too - I've probably offended more people on dime unintentionally with bad stereos etc but nonetheless, it's meant access to so much wonderful live music and saved me a small fortune in postage sending copies of my recordings out and getting wonderful recordings back. I also haven't lost contact with many of the traders I used to swop with because we're all members of the dime community and I've made more new friends and contacts too !I'm done with Mediafire. Dime has been great and I'll continue to use it.

BTW - When will you get to upload your excellent Cardiff show in stereo? There shouldn't be a problem with Dime, as long as you document the reason in your torrent description. I really want to hear B&W World in both ears!

I shouldn't say this, BUT:
For years, I have wasted much time sorting out Norton-McAfee problems on friends' PCs ...
It seems as if Kaspersky or whatever seems cheapest/most reliable of the commercial products.
I advise (if you must use web/other peoples' discs...)
a) avoid porn/films/streaming/some FLAC etc sharing ...
b) use daily updated-run updated FREE supplied e.g. MSE-Firewall ... (or equivalent on Mac-Linux OS ...).

I'm working nights today and tomorrow but have Monday off so I promise I'll do the honourable thing and upload the stereo Cardiff show - really sorry about the balls up !
