I particularly liked this review! -- God (or whoever)save The Great Imposter!

De ese trabajo sólo indultaron tres cortes -Down Among the Wines and Spirits, Complicated Shadows y Sulphur to Sugarcane-, pues Elvis Costello prefirió tunear viejas canciones como Good Year For The Roses o Everyday I Write The Book con una pátina de country tan gruesa que a veces resultaban irreconocibles.

Elvis Costello returned to a bright star in the Sunday closing of the Heineken Jazzaldia, this time with a compelling proposition in which it reviewed in key country, their successes and starred in a historic duet with Kris Kristofferson.

ANYONE who minimally meet the trajectory of such Declan Patrick MacManus has ever been formulated as the following questions. Who the hell is Elvis Costello? Is the same as 35 years ago was part of the new wave born of the embers of punk? Rocker "hardened or lover of African-American roots music? Is there a style that can resist? How can someone change so radically from one disk to another and always out victorious? Unable to answer these questions convincingly say that Costello is such a wonderful impostor able to wear the most diverse musical costumes. Although born on the banks of the Thames, has absorbed so much and so well the rhythms of the music of the southern U.S. that is capable of sounding as if he had grown up practicing in a barn in Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee.

On his return to San Sebastian on Sunday stalled a cream-colored hat and chose camper transfigured into an irresistible southern U.S. interpreter. Already did three years ago closed the Jazzaldia with pianist Allen Toussaint, but then it was cured with R & B and soul the scars of Hurricane Katrina left in New Orleans, this time the excuse was playing country accelerated and devilish. The Leader and The Imposters atractions did not stop unnecessary circumlocution. He stepped on stage and shoot at close range a version of Mystery Train as a tribute to the King of Rock, who owes his stage name. And Elvis Presley went straight to Blame It On Cain, the first of several of their older songs that gained new life in miraculous transfiguration. The British rimmed glasses with brightest of all time, and reached reviewed key-in hillbilly songs like (The Angels Want to Wear My) Red Shoes or New Amsterdam, which included quotes from You "ve Got to Hide Your Love Away The Beatles.

To serve your particular country picnic invited The Sugarcane, the formidable bluegrass band, violin, accordion, guitar, dobro, bass and mandolin, with which he recorded Secret, Profane & Sugarcane (2009). In this work only pardoned three cuts-Down Among the Wines and Spirits, Complicated Shadows and Sulphur to Sugarcane-tune for Elvis Costello chose older songs such as Good Year For The Roses or Everyday I Write The Book with a patina of country so thick that sometimes beyond recognition. Even for more advanced costellófilos.

The only time he stepped off the field when the city was plugged an electric guitar with four strings and shook with the tempestuous Trini The Delivery Man The rest of the concert he did with the acoustics, which ripped as if there were no tomorrow Version The Friend of The Devil and, above all, the potent Don 't Lie To Me. And not only that, but also advanced three new compositions: the bucolic Poor Borrowed Dress, the fun Jimmie Standing In The Rain and With delicate Josephine A Slow Drag, presented as "a 1921 rock and roll."

Historic moment

Bises with Kristofferson

In the first a breath away from the respectable with the central theme of the film Nottingham Hill, stripped of any trace of syrup and revisited in a reduced form of guitar, bass and accordion. "We love you," shouted one spectator. "We also unto you, individually and collectively," Costello blurted before asking to return to the stage Kris Kristofferson, who had earlier opened the evening with a beautiful and peaceful solo recital. In addition to a picture for posterity, never before had met in the same public stage, "when a duo led to the interpretation of three songs, two of Pilgrim and Kristofferson-This Old Road" and April 5th, consisting of both near Rosanne Cash, the Johnny hijísima. Historical blunders despite the letter of the Texan, who left the tables to applause

When the Texan tables left, Elvis had not even sung the last word. First was its most primitive south hit, Alison, and then topped with a blistering cover of Happy, that Keith Richards sound torpedo launched in Exile on Main Street. It was a an excellent tribute to The Rolling Stones and the perfect expression of ecstasy happy spectators who lived 3100, to be sure, soon be back to enjoy this great spectacle.

Some suggested yesterday that in the future Costello closed the concert with life in the Heineken Jazzaldia Trini. It's so good it makes you want to catch a plane now directly Santiago de Compostela to see him again tonight in the festival Xacobeo. May God-or whoever-Hail to the glorious fake and allow it to continue giving concerts unforgettable. And the musical genre he wants.

Now for the 2nd part of my account:

I enjoyed Kris' show and was surprised at how many of his songs were anti war or overtly political. He spoke of Los Desaparecidos of Argentina, the Sandanistas and also of the killing (by the US Clinton administration) of a prominent Iraqi singer.

Elvis sounded a little croaky at first but , as often the case, his voice soon warmed up. He endeared himself to the crowd with some choice Basque phrases.. "Kaixo Donosti" (Hello San Sebastian) "Zer Moduz?" (How are ya?) "Eskerrik asko" (Thanks) and "Gabon" (Goodnight) There were also some Spanish style handclaps in "Complicated Shadows" and "Don't Lie To Me".

Lyric prompts were put on stage for the encore of "She", a regular in the set for his Europe shows. Funny how Elvis seems to have difficulty remembering this! Then Elvis announced "The moment I've been waiting for.." before welcoming back Kris Kristofferson. You could sense that these are the moments that Elvis loves. You sense he would have gone to San Sebastian just to have the opportunity to play these 3 songs with Kris.

I was privelidged to witness this unique moment, the highlight being the CCK or KCC composition "April 5th" (I Believe in You) Perhaps inevitably Kris DID fluff his lines a little in the only verse he had to remember, bless him, but the crowd and Costello were kindly forgiving.

The band then returned for a final encore featuring "Alison" containing lines from "The Wind Cries Mary" and what appeared to be "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". The show ended around 0020h with an appropriate and rousing rendition of "Happy"

We rushed round to the stage exit after the show as several of the Canes were leaving. I congratulated each one I saw. One cheeky friend of mine even claimed a beer from Stuart Duncan. A short while later Elvis emerged still exhilarated about the show. "Wasn't that Great? " he kept repeating. I shook his hand, thanked him for coming (as always)and asked a couple of other things that shall remain personal.. I asked about Diana & the kids, he replied they were fine & that he was off to see them the next day (Monday). A couple of photos later and an energised, even youthful looking Elvis climbed in his van and disappeared into the night.

We rounded off the night at a terrace disco by the harbour before heading off to a club where a French band named "The Jouby's" were playing some very danceable ska beats. I said I'd give them a mention here. It was a great way to finish a fantastic day around 5am.

Our first full 'Canes TV broadcast - a lot longer than ACL. Great version of Poor Borrowed Dress, even though Dennis's bass lead seems to be unplugged for the first part.

Just watched this and I'm so mad with myself for not making the effort and getting to see one of the 'Canes shows in Europe in July , my time in Africa making the Dublin show in June impossible to attend. What an incredibly tight set-up, clearly benefiting from a month on the road. Elvis' voice is in astonishing shape, never pitching too high, always supremely controlled. So many highlights - even She made compelling viewing, with its winning interplay of stand-up bass and accordian. Elvis sweating buckets gives more and more resolve to the songs. Kris Kristofferson's faltering performance is engrossing. His calm, commanding composure lets you know that this how he is , take it or leave it. He's unafraid to openly ask for help with the words from Elvis and Elvis just gives it, no smarty pants eyebrow raising or sideways smug grinning , that might have been more common reaction, trying to make light of the situation. An astonishing piece of viewing, regardless of the music.

This piece of tv would be just perfect as a marketing tool for National Ransom, offered to tv stations or as a dvd supplement to an edition of the album or something. A absolute killer of a show.

A bootleg DVD is circulating which purports to include all the songs played, including three that were not broadcast. The artwork is here:

http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... _Cover.jpg

It is for sale here:

http://www.ioffer.com/i/elvis-costello- ... -174268285

from the sort of vendor that forum members would probably wish to have nothing to do with (not least because the vendor is also offering pirate copies of episodes of Spectacle season 1 which are readily available on the official release) . Respect therefore to docinwestchester for making available the version that he did. Is there any evidence of the fuller DVD version of the concert now circulating on Dime or similar?
