Another Tower of Song?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Oh, bobster, I'm sorry to do this to you, but I've never ever heard of Lene Lovich. And Outkast is very good indeed, you must be living in a cave. And I don't know if Lene Lovich rocks out or not (how could I?), but I am in a rocking out mood, and I know of no song that rocks harder than the one I'm adding.

Out: Lene Lovich
In: Kathleen Hanna, the one with the mustache, and the other one

Le Tigre - Deceptacon
Nat King Cole - The Very Thought of You
Kate Bush - Babushka
Morrissey - Suedehead
The Clash - London Calling
Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man
The Kinks - Days
Sarah Vaughan - Embraceable You
Nick Lowe - Without love
David Bowie - Queen Bitch

Bobster,

You owe yourself a listen to the new Outkast record(s). It's the best double album since Wilco's Being There, which was the best double album since the White Album. With Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, Outkast has become my new favorite rock band, and I say that without a trace of irony.

Sorry I took out the Monkees. Nothing personal.

I liked the Lene Lovich choice, by the way, though I like "Lucky Number" better. Maybe I'll save that one for later. That or a song by Blotto.

I go from being proud of my ignorance to deeply, deeply ashamed.

It sounds like Outkast might be -- dare I say it, or even imagine it -- even better than Lene Lovich (who, for the benefit of Ms. BA, I'll describe as a quirky singer/occasional songwriter who made some fun and interesting records on Stiff back in the day -- every article about her mentioned that she had once supposedly made her living recording screams for French horror movies).

And don't feel bad, Noise, for deleting the Dolphin Song...I basically go through life with a giant seltzer bottle icon over me. I forgive you, the Monkees forgive, and perhaps even the dolphins do.

And, just to show what a "good sport" I am, I'll leave Ms. BA's choice alone (even though I've never heard of her, either -- let's face it, I'm badly out of the loop)....

Out - Morrissey
In - Hedwig and the Angry Inch!

Kathleen Hanna -- the one with the mustache, and the other one
Le Tigre - Deceptacon
Nat King Cole - The Very Thought of You
Kate Bush - Babushka
Hedwig and the Angry Inch -- Wig in a Box
The Clash - London Calling
Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man
The Kinks - Days
Sarah Vaughan - Embraceable You
Nick Lowe - Without love
David Bowie - Queen Bitch

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Wig in a Box
The Clash - London Calling
Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man
The Kinks - Days

I'm tempted to use the Jackson Doofster excuse ("I don't know it") for everything I cut out. In fact, I'm giving into temption and, since I've never heard (or don't remember) this particular Queen cut (clearly was not on "Night at the Opera" which my sister owned and I listened to), that's what goes. (Also, some of their stuff was just kind of icky.)\

BTW: You all need to go out immediately and rent the outstanding DVD of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"...

Out -- Queen
In -- Smokey Robinson

Pulp - Monday Morning
Nat King Cole - The Very Thought of You
Kate Bush - Babushka
Blur - This is a Low
The Clash - London Calling
Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man
The Kinks - Days
Sarah Vaughan - Embraceable You
Smoky Robinson -- The Love I Saw in You was Just a Mirage
The Specials - Too Much Too Young

 ..that's one of their best songs IMHO, and a great video of Freddie with a penguin and a bunch of bananas on his head. Its on Classic Queen and also Queen's Greatest Hits 2...

ah well, c'est la vie

I was interested to read, LC, about how high most of the songs on Queen's GHs Vol 2 had charted especially in Europe (though not surprised, it rises above Queen GHs Vol 1 imho). Perhaps Bobster has heard of this one, since it featured in Highlander and was number one in 35 countries.

Out: Kate Bush - Babushka

Blur - This is a Low

How big are Queen in the US?

I think they're one of those bands that you cannot fault, and pretty much everyone likes them. They never seem to get much credit though from the music media, so you never read a 'Greatest Rock ballad/riff/group/single/album, etc.. with Queen in it. I was listening to Queen greatest hits volumes 1-3 the other day, and it's mindblowingly good, especially 2.

Someone else might be able to give a better idea (I'm in Australia), but it seems that nowhere near as big as in Europe, where they must have mainly concentrated. It could do with their image, and conservative middle america being uptight about Freddie. The I Want To Break Free video ('84, featuring the lads in drag) was banned in many parts of the US... Did you get vols 1-3 in the one package or something? You may have different liner notes. Vol 2 outlines how well each song did in Europe and the UK (very well), but hardly any mention of the states. They were a brilliant band who achieved their artistic visions on a huge scale and with such style.

Queen was pretty darn popular in the States -- though it's possible they were bigger still elsewhere and may have had more top 40 hits there. As far as the sexual element goes, people (or at least the kids I knew) were sort of willfully ignorant about it...especially since androgyny was such a thing back then, half of us assumed everyone was gay and the other half denied anyone was!

As evidence of their popularity, I offer these lines from a song sung by Homer Simpson (to the tune of Sinatra's "It Was a Very Good Year")

"When I was 17
I had some very good beer.
Some very good beer, I bought me
With a Fake I.D.
My name was "Brian McGee"
I stayed up listening to Queen
When I was 17."

I'm a volume 1 type myself. Those were the ones from when I was young, and that's the best time to be into Queen. Just back from a family half-term trip and that invariably means vol 1 or 2 being requested by either my 10 or 7 year old sons. Unfortunately we only had vol 2 this time. I really can't bear listening to One Vision any longer, but it did all get a bit poignant towards the end (one that has me reaching for the hankie, not on vol 2, but I have it on a re-release of Bohemian Rhapsody when it went to no 1 again after Freddie's death, is Those Were The Days of Our Life). I bought Seven Seas of Rhye when it was out as a single - '73, probably. I love Don't Stop Me Now.

Out: Dusty (according to the Pet Shop Boys, she didn't actually like Son of A Preacher Man herself, so there you go)

In: a recent Lloyd classic, from a man with 20 years of quality behind him

Pulp - Monday Morning
Nat King Cole - The Very Thought of You
Queen - A Kind Of Magic
Bikini Kill - Anti-Pleasure Dissertation
The Clash - London Calling
Lloyd Cole - My Other Life
