Your favourites movies. ( Top 5 )

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

1. Vertigo--not everyone's favorite Hitchcock, but I LOOOVE the score, and I'm a big sucker for movies filmed in San Francisco.

2. Godfather--part one or two, whichever you like, they are one movie in my mind.

3. Bringing Up Baby--Cary Grant in a negligee and athletic socks chasing a dog. What could be better?

4. Big Night--beautiful, charming little movie that does such a great job of evoking a time and place, and one of the best foodie movies ever.

5. The Princess Bride--Just recently introduced it to my 8-year-old; she's just old enough to get the jokes, and everyone loves a happy ending.

There are lots and lots of runners-up. I'ts hard to pick just five. But those up there are the ones I come back to more than some others.

Otis, I also only recently saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for the first time, and wasn't it a revelation? So stunning to look at, a great story, and again, a great score ( though I didn't care too much for the goofy song over the closing credits).
It's a radiation vibe I'm groovin' on

There is no way I can offer a definitive list of my top 5 films as it really is a mood driven thing. However, the closest I could come at the moment is, in no particular order:

Taxi Driver
Seven Samurai
Wise Blood
Strictly Ballroom
Tampopo

Tim(e):
Wise Blood
An overlooked classic - John Huston, based on the Flannery O'Conner story - great perfomances by Brad Dourif (Billy Bibbit from Cuckoo's Nest) and the ubiquitous Harry Dean Stanton. Good Choice!

My 15 year old daughter (well, 15 in a few days as she frequently reminds me) has just recently discovered Nightmare. She thinks it kicks all ass. She saw your avatar the other day and loved it. She just bought a pair of socks with Jack on them not long ago.

I know someone mentioned this earlier, but I did forget about The Jerk. "I found my special purpose!" Classically funny.

DrS is always good for Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles. We think the three boys may actually be old enough to appreciate the infamous fart scene by now.

I think I'm physically incapable of staying away from this (and what about you, El Vez?)

Intriquing lists (he said, even as he both hates and loves them) -- though I have to say I'm noting an unfortunate, if inevitable, bias toward films made since 1970 or so.

As a corrective, and in honor of my less than culturally astute half-brother who refuses to watch any film made before 1964, I will choose only films BEFORE 1964 -- and, frankly, these are probably just as good or better as anything that's come since -- though it could change at a moment's notice. Some of you will remember these choices from other lists of mine....

(In alphabetical order)

The Apartment
Casablanca
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Rear Window
The Rules of the Game

Eternal Sunshine
Raging Bull
Office Space

Honorable Mention:

Magnolia
Touch of Evil
Persona
Godfather II
Manhattan
Modern Romance
Capricorn One
Vanilla Sky
O Brother Where Art Thou
The Man Who Wasn't There
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
HudSucker Proxy
Shortcuts
Blue Velvet
Pulp Fiction
The Days of Wine and Roses
Punch Drunk Love
Tommy Boy
Rumblefish
I am Trying to Break Your Heart
Lost Highway

Sorry, I'm a generally uncultured creature of the modern age

Not forgetting The Good Girl. Taking an ordinary girl like Jennifer Aniston and making her complex and beautful was... oh never mind

A great little film though

And speaking of Hal David, which I was, why isn't Martin Donovan a superstar?

He was Kevin Spacey before it was cool to be Kevin Spacey.

Actually, ClareQuilty, another one of my all time favorites is a pre-1964 (I think) movie that ought to be close to your heart, the Kubrick version of "Lolita", that movie about that big little, small little, big little girl wot James Mason as Humbert Humbert and Peter Sellers as you.

How could I forget my namesake! Of course, I can't believe I left Kubrick out. Let's add Lolita, Strangelove, and The Shining.

Glad someone finally noticed the username. There was something so mysterious about CQ, which is ironic, because I happen to be a total bore.

I love Kubrick's LOLITA. Every still is a masterpiece, and Sellars is in top form. As I think I mentioned in the Sellars thread a while back, he was born to play Quilty.
