I was at the Copenhagen show last night and just wanted to make a little report. The set list was just about the same as in Stockholm with the exception of a couple of numbers, unfortuately I didn't write them down for your benefit! But I can say that the place he played was a GREAT venue for an EC/Imposter's show. Intimate and good atmosphere. I actually made the fatal mistake of jumping up right in front of the stage in my eagerness to get close to the Man. That was perhaps a mistake, as the sound is much better away from the stage. VON O who I had the pleasure of meeting at the show, can perhaps give a better evaluation of the sound.

IN GENERAL I was happy with the concert, as the Imposters rocked big time, but Elvis looked like hell and like he's on his death bed. He did NOT look healthy at all, not as fresh as he was for the North gigs. At the risk of sounding like a dick, he played pretty shabbily last night, especially on some of his standards and older hits. Everything got played just a little too fast and he lost timing on a lot of the numbers and fumbling with chords at times. Of course nobody can really hear that when you crank it up to 11 on your amp and crack out a bunch of distortion. :lol: The Wall of Sound also drown Elvis out at times and one couldn't hear his voice that clearly, although I was in the front of the stage and maybe his guitar amp blasted me and overshadowed the P.A. from where I stood.

All in all a very good show, and he was incredibly generous as usual, playing a LONG time 2 and a half hours and singing his guts out and performing with sweat and spit flying over the place.

I think he's been touring for way too long. He needs a break, but he's still the most compelling act as far as I'm concerned. Unless Bob Weir and the Boys come to Europe of course.

I sin attitude har Elvis Costello stadig punkerens utilnærmelighed. Men nedenunder banker der en voldsom spilleglæde.

Lørdag aften I begyndelsen virkede det som et rent håndværkerjob. Arbejdet skulle gøres hurtigst muligt, så man kunne komme hjem igen.

Lyden var ikke for ren. Der var ingen pauser mellem numrene, ingen tid afsat til unødig snak eller til publikumsbifald.

Det var ligepå, kontant, ret utilnærmeligt, ret råt.

Det var Elvis Costello, som han reelt altid har været, siden han i 1977 kom frem samtidig med punkbølgen - som han dog gennem alle årene har haft en vis intellektuel distance til.

Det var den ustoppelige spillemand, den runde mand uden den store vrede, Elvis Costello viste frem i Vega under en fin men langt fra uforglemmelig koncert.

Kloge Elvis, skarpe Elvis, spillemands Elvis. Elvis, Elvis, Elvis. Man bliver aldrig træt af det navn.

Vist har Elvis Costello fyldt halvdelen af sit produktive karriereforløb med eksperimenter grænsende til det pinagtige. Men når han er god, så er han i reglen både fremragende og unik. Det var han dag også i glimt foran et publikum på 1.500 i København.

Lille, firskåren, gemt bag jakkesæt og solbriller med orangefarvet styrkeglas. Ingen hat denne aften - men masser af guitar, masser af rock, punket beskidt blues og møskønne ballader.

Ustoppelig var han sammen med sine gamle kumpaner, hvoraf tangentbokseren Steve Nieve i lange perioder overstrålede sin chef. Det var ikke småting, den arkitektlignende wizard lavede af minimalistiske fills, af store dundertunge klangflader og alt der i mellem. Ikke for børn og ikke noget man i dag overhovedet bruger tid på - den slags har man computere og tilhørende programmer til. Nieve er en mand af en svunden tid. Men hvilken tid.

Nyere materiale som den seneste og langt fra uefne »The Delivery Man«-skive var der bunkevis af i Vega. Tilmed lidt for meget, men Elvis ville spille. I mere end to timer plus de to timer han brugte til at spille sig varm under lydprøven. Generøst delte han ud af sit katalog, hvorfra traverne (det er kærligt ment): »Radio Radio«, »(I don't want to go to) Chelsea« og især »Watching the detectives« naglede sig fast under huden natten ud. Stor kunst fra en lille mand sunget med et organ, som hele verden med rette misunder.

Sådanne højdepunkter var der desværre for få af den aften, som i sin helhed aldrig blev hverken uforglemmelig eller decideret magisk.

Og så kommer man ikke udenom hage nummer to: manglen på ungdommens vrede. Costello er, og sikkert godt så, blevet et rundere menneske med årene. Men en gennemført punket, beskidtspillende Elvis er og bliver dén rigtige Elvis i nostalgikerens bog. Og ham mødte man alt for sjældent denne aften.

THE FIRST Article

Elvis Costello still has the inaccessible attitude of a Punk, but underneath a violent joy of performing pulsates.
At the onset Saturday evening, it seemed like purely business, a job that should be done as quickly as possible, so one can go home again. The sound was not very clean. There were no pauses between songs, and no time for unnecessary talk or applause from the audience.
It was direct, blunt, pretty inaccessible, very raw.
This was Elvis Costello as he has in reality always been, since he emerged simultaneously with the Punk Wave, which he has actually kept an intellectual distance to throughout the years.

Number 2

It was the unstoppable musician, the round man without the great anger that Elvis Costello exhibited at Vega, during a fine but far from unforgettable concert.

Smart Elvis, sharp Elvis, Elvis the musician. Elvis Elvis Elvis. You never get tired of that name.
Elvis has filled half of his productive career with experiments verging on the embarrassing. But when he is good, then he is both outstanding and unique. He was indeed that, today in front of an audience of 1,500 in Copenhagen.

Short, square and hidden behind a suit and with orange tinted sunglasses. No hat this evening, but a bunch of guitars, a bunch of rock, punky, dirty blues and beautiful ballads.

He was unstoppable with his old cronies, although a number of times overshadowed by his piano player Steve Nieve. The architect looking wizard created minimalist fills, giant clanging sounds, and everything in between. Not kids stuff, and not normally things that one would use a lot of time on to learn – one has computers and other programs that can handle that type of stuff. Nieve is a man of a forgotten time. But which time?

There was plenty of newer material, like the most recent and far from bad The Delivery Man record, maybe a little too much, but Elvis wanted to play it. For more than two hours in addition to the two hours he used to warm up during the sound check. He generously drew from his catalogue, where standards (positively meant) like Radio Radio, Chelsea and especially Watching the Detectives got under one’s skin throughout the night. Great art from a little man sung with an instrument that the rest of the world rightfully is in envy of.

Such highpoints were there unfortunately too few of this evening that in its entirety was neither unforgettable nor decidedly magic.

Then you can’t overlook snag number 2: the missing youthful anger. Costello is surely gotten softer during the years, but a more totally punkish and dirty playing Elvis IS and will always be the REAL Elvis, nostalgically seen. We saw way too little of this man tonight.

The concert was great of course and it was nice meeting Copehagen Fan. I was standing in the middle fifth row from the front and the sound was loud but EC's voice rang through. My friend were really impressed by his voice and tight guitar playing, but then again - none of them had heard him live before.
As Cope says EC didn't look good and you can only imagine what he is going to look like at the end of the long tour ahead of him. He looked and behaved a lot happier at the North concert last 1½ year ago but it was of course another kind of concert.
A shame that I can't find a setlist anywhere but highlights were:

Watching the detectives
In the darkest place
Brilliant mistake (were Steve played some great extended keyboard after the chorus)
Button my lip
Hidden charm (a perfect version)
PLAU
Scarlet tide (the last song and everbody seemed stunned)

Strangely i think that Bedlam failed to catch the same groove that's on the record and Pump it up was done in blindness. (if you can say that in English) Suit of lights is a favorite of mine but didn't have the sound i would have expected.

Overall a very good concert and im looking forward to Saturdays show in Hamburg.

VON good update..and very nice to meet you. I was actually stoned out of my mind and in my own world at the time, so I am sorry if I appeared distracted :lol:

My highlights of the show were:

The Next Time Round - Pure power cranked out on that one.

Chelsea - Sloppy but good energy and wacky guitar.

In the Darkest Place - VERY COOL, quite and classy with a touch of distorted guitar that gave it more power than the studio version.

Either Side of the Same Town - Great power ballad as usual.

The Judgement - Great singing and power behind it all.

High Fidelity - Just because it was unexpected.

Temptation - Cool to hear it with a band, although it's not something that EC can play very well in concert.

Delivery Man- COOL version, with Elvis playing a 4 string guitar.

Country Darkness - Maybe the best of the night.

This makes me really look forward to the Ryman show. I think there will be more of a country twist to it though. Actually, I was kind of hoping that since George Jones is playing there just three days later that he might make an appearance. . . . .

Declan Patricks MacManus' hitparade

Costello demonstrerede en træfsikkerhed i sit nærmest legendariske sangkatalog, at det var en ren fryd.

40 numre på to en halv time. Om den 50-årige Declan Patrick MacManus også kaldet Elvis Costello er blevet ramt af lynet i sit ægteskab med sin noget yngre kone, jazzpianisten Diana Krall, eller om han lige har brug for sætte den samlede rockbranche på plads, vides ikke. Fakta var dog, at han lørdag aften i Store Vega spillede elektrisk i Danmark for første gang i cirka 15 år, og demonstrerede en træfsikkerhed i sit nærmest legendariske sangkatalog, at det var en ren fryd.

Costello er ofte blevet slået i hartkorn med 70'ernes punkscene. Godt nok udkom hans debutalbum "My Aim Is True" i 1977 og havde spor punkens rastløse væsen i sig. Men den alsidige kunstner har dog trukket på et utal af andre genrer og arbejdet med orkester-, film-, ballet-, og teatermusik. Indledningsmusikken, inden koncerten gik i gang, talte sit eget sprog. Soul, rock'n'roll, swing, jazz og countrynumre fyldte salen op, inden Elvis Costello entrerede præcis kl. 20.15 iført sort jakkesæt, pebermyntegrønt slips, de obligatorisk briller med stort stel og orange brilleglas og ikke mindst et par temmeligt opsigtsvækkende sylespidse boots i glitrende sølv.

Aftenen skulle vise sig at blive en ren hitparade af Costello-klassikere hentet helt tilbage fra debuten "My Aim Is True" og til sidste års fremragende "The Delivery Man", og Costello selv var knivskarp og skød sine sange af lige fra hoften. Men den perfekte timing og ikke mindst den glohede indlevelse var lige så meget Costellos fremragende backingband The Imposters' fortjeneste. The Imposters består af Davey Faragher (bas), Steve Nieve (klaver, keyboard) og Pete Thomas (trommer). De to sidstnævnte har fulgt aftenens hovedperson i næsten gennem 30 år, og var i sin tid også grundstammen i Costellos gamle backingband The Attractions.

Allerede ved tredje nummer, "Next Time Around" hentet fra et af hovedværkerne "Blood & Chocolate", viste Costello kløer med sin blanding af funk og new wave med den klaverboksende Steve Nieve, der med sit eminente spil under hele koncerten viste, hvorfor Costello har holdt fast i ham. "Radio, Radio" ("This Year's Model") blev eksekveret stramt lige fra punkens underliv og med Nieves stildannende Farfisa-orgel som drilsk appetitvækker. Under hele koncerten skiftede Costello guitarer, som vi andre skifter sokker. En kæmpe Gretsch-guitar blev hængt om mandens hals, og derefter gik det over stok og sten på den kogende "Buttom My Lip", der var en ren opvisning i improviseret legestue, når det er sjovest.

På balladen "Country Darkness" og "The Delivery Man" viste Costello, hvordan har har udviklet sig fra en spæd sanger til at være en gudbenådet vokalist, der i den grad kan synge den melankolske tone helt ind under huden. Især i sidstnævnte nummer, hvor tekstlinjen "In a certain light he looked like Elvis / In a certain way he seemed like Jesus" blev hængende i luften lang tid efter, at sangen var slut. ("I Don't Wanna Go To) Chelsea", "Pump It Up", "Shipbuilding", "Oliver's Army", "Beyond Belief" og den afsluttende ("What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love And Understanding" er total-klassikere i Elvis Costellos bagkatalog, og sådan blev de leveret. Udødelige sange med plads i rockhistorien. Elvis Costello & The Imposters fremragende koncert vil også få sin plads i Vegas historie, den var simpelthen totalt medrivende og viste, at Costello musikalsk har stået distancen i næsten 30 år.

I see Motel Matches has gone missing, hope he's saving it for Hammersmith. Shipbuilding comes in, I love the song but tend to drift off when it is played.
I like that tie! But he does look a little feverish.

Well for some reason we drank a lot of ouzo before the concert so you didn't appear distracted at all :)

I'll try and translate the Gaffa review later on because my girlfriend's internet connection is slow and expensive

Det var medskrækblandet fryd, publikum i Vega oplevede Elvis Costello i højeste gear fra første sekund. Næsten uden at trække vejret racede og rablede han sig på rekordtid igennem et større antal sange fra bagkataloget. Med mellemrummet mellem fortænderne klistret til mikrofonen og øjnene knebet i bag briller med rødorange glas som på det 24 år gamle album 'Trust'. Men dette første hæsblæsende kvarters tid viste sig blot at være opvarmningen. Som flinke sportsmænd skulle The Imposters lige have strakt musklerne godt igennem, inden det gik løs for alvor.
'Button My Lip' indleder Costellos nye cd 'The Delivery Man', og nummeret indledte aftenens hovedprogram. Et kaotisk og intensitetsmættet nummer, som viste sig at give endnu bedre mening spillet live, hvor The Imposters evne til at swinge melodisk i selv de mest kantede og hovedkulds numre satte sig stærkt igennem. Det er ikke mange bands, der simultant kan spille jazz, country og rock'n'roll skåret ind til benet. Men The Imposters kan, og sangene fra 'The Delivery Man' kræver det alt sammen. Fra hyperfølsomheden på 'Country Darkness' til 'Bedlam's kontrollerede fråde.
Efter i en årrække at have høstet mest respekt for sine eksperimenterende ekskursioner ud i klassisk og jazz og ind under det solbrændte i Burt Bacharachs univers har Costello med 'The Delivery Man' lavet sit mest indholdsrige 'Costello-album' i lang tid. Her samler han mange af en lang karrieres musikalske tråde i et spændstigt og livligt udtryk. Raffineret i nogle sange, hvoraf flere er helt på niveau med det bedste fra hans egen hånd. Hvilket ikke siger så lidt, blev man mindet om i løbet af en lang og gavmild koncert.
Begrænsningens kunsthar aldrig været Costellos force. En myreflittig sangskriver, der på 'The Delivery Man' heldigvis har opereret med et mindre nåleøje, end han for ofte har haft for vane. Det er, som om den mere afslappede tilgang til musikken paradoksalt nok denne gang har løftet sangene med op i mere koncentrerede luftlag. 'Country Darkness'. Så blåt og flot som noget Costello har lavet. 'Either Side of the Same Town', 'Nothing Clings Like Ivy' og titelnummeret med de magiske linjer »In a certain light he looked just like Elvis/ in a certain way he seemed like Jesus«. Vredet som en klejne for hvert gram mytologisk resonans. Af denne anden Elvis med den spinkle overkrop lagt langt frem i selen. Hvor man indimellem har haft på fornemmelsen, at sidespringene sugede mere energi, end de gav, er det på 'The Delivery Man', som om der bliver betalt tilbage i form af et naturligt overskud og en egen tændt afslappethed. Den til tider lidt for professionelle sangskriver er igen så personlig og skarp som nogensinde. Selv den desperat-satiriske kulturkritik 'Monkey To Man', som virker noget anstrengt postulerende på cd, lykkedes det Costello at fremhæve som en slags samlingspunkt for koncerten.
På en måde var hele koncerten en slags samlingspunkt for de 27 år, der er gået siden debutalbummet 'My Aim Is True'. Sjældent har en koncert så sikkert bundet en sløjfe, som i én elegant bevægelse samlede før og nu. 'Blame It On Cain', 'This Year's Girl' og 'Watching The Detectives' fra de to første lp'er. 1978 hvor Costello klarere end nogen anden så medietidsalderen tone frem i fascinationsmønstrene. Et righoldigt udvalg fra 80'er-lp'erne lsquo Blood & Chocolate' og lsquo King of America'. Sange, der hele tiden fungerede som spejle for de nye numre. Bortset fra den suveræne sangskrivning er det måske den bedste forklaring på 'The Delivery Man's triumf. Uden på nogen måde at være en retro-udgivelse tillader Costello sig at være retrospektiv i sin tilgang til de enkelte sange. Den midaldrende musiker spejler sig i et yngre jeg og genfinder sig selv. Intakt og forandret. Det er hemmeligheden bag 'The Delivery Man's vitalitet, der kun synes at vokse i den rigtige retning.
Vist havdekoncerten et par skønhedspletter. Nogle sange var så forcerede, at de aldrig helt kom frem i lyset. Med så stort et bagkatalog kan det være svært at vælge og vrage, og ved et par lejligheder havde koncerten nok været bedst tjent med et fravalg.
Men det var småting. Altoverskyggende var det en koncert præget af et massivt overskud. Med en Elvis Costello, der med et æsels stædighed efterhånden har forvandlet sin naturlige skryden til et instrument i stand til at mønstre stor skønhed. Med Davey Farragher og Pete Thomas som storspillende ankermænd og Steve Nieve, klaviatur-ekvilibristen, der heldigvis kun ser ud til at blive mere syret med alderen.
»Diving for dear life/ when we could be diving for pearls«. De sidste linjer i 'Shipbuilding' fra 1983. En af de mest bevægende og mest diskrete antiautoritære, politiske sange. Det lå som en undertone under koncerten. 'Monkey To Man'. Og hvad var det nu lige, der var så latterligt ved 'peace, love & understanding'? De spørgsmål, der skal stilles til livets aktører og til magthaverne. De lå lige under overfladen. Det blev aldrig en ufarlig opremsning af hits på trods af, at man fik alle de Costello-klassikere, man kunne ønske sig. Sunget og spillet med en spejlrefleks, der samlede før og nu, sangene, musikerne og os, der lyttede.
