I'm taking my last to finals for my AA degree today so I decided to spend the time in between raiding the local Borders, so besides last week's purchase of KoA (This is the first time I'm listening to it and I'm slowly becoming attached to it.) Here is what i bought today:

Singles Going Steady-The Buzzcocks (one of many bands intorduced by the rhino No Thanks! 70's Punk box set)

Something Else By the Kinks- I've been listening a lot to the Lola Vs The Powerman and The Moneygoround album, so I decided to get something else by the kinks.

Read Music/Speak Spanish- by Desaparecidos (Conor Oberst side project)
I've been loking for this for 3 years.

I also got two cassettes for my insurance rental, Hank williams greatest hits and the best of ELO.

The Fall - Peel Sessions Box Set

This arrived yesterday. Anyone know if the guitar riff from "Athlete Cured" was stolen from Spinal Tap's "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You", or the other way around? I assume the former, since the tune didn't appear on a Fall album until 1988's "The Frenz Experiment". Funny that it doesn't get a mention in the Peel liner notes - it's so blatant. Wonder if Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins have been made aware of the resemblance.

Don't know the Spinal Tap song, but isn't it a fantastic collection? Would be good to see an analysis from Fall specialists on which songs surpass their studio originals. To me, a few leap out immediately for this accolade: Container Drivers, Lie Dream of Casino Soul, Couldn't Get Ahead.

Haven't been able to listen to all of it yet, but what I've heard so far I really like. Go rent Spinal Tap, listen to "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You" (that's the tune they play at the end in Japan), then put on "Athlete Cured". No doubt about it - 100% rip-off. Not that I mind. It's a good riff.

Being a desk potato, I downloaded it in under a minute, and yes, the riff is undeniably similar.

WSS, did you get the new Go-Betweens' album ?
I've read a few reviews describing it as superb and one of their best.
Can you confirm ?

Winging its way to me as we speak, or so say the good folks at Amazon.com. I'll let you know once I give it a spin.

Not a purchase really, but I've *ahem* borrowed the Frank Sinatra Capitol Years set from a friend, for listening purposes only, of course.

Superb stuff. That's his best period IMHO, although there are also a lot of gems on the Reprise set.

Just bought a CD by the Russian Futurists (Our Thickness). It's not bad. Not blindingly original, but not bad. Reminds me of Neutral Milk Hotel.

Just got from Amazon.com :
- Elvis Costello - King Of America (Rhino)
- Brodsky Quartet - Moodswings

Upon first listen I have to say "Real Emotional Girl" wasn't as good as I expected. (I played Randy Newman's original version and liked it better).
Well, maybe it will grow on me.
I do like "My Mood Swings" though.

Black and White Night- Roy Orbison along with EC and others as his backing band. I'm tempted to say that THE COMEDIANS cover is better than EC's two originals, but that's only a tiny bit of temptation.

Lifted or The Story is in the Soil.....- Bright Eyes.
WIDE AWAKE is one of the BEST new albums I've gotten this year.

can't wait for the new coldplay

I've been listening to The Go-Betweens latest, "Oceans Apart". Very nice album but, typically, I like the Forster's sharply written tunes more than McLennan's. The album's also lacking in edge a bit to me - makes me feel like Middle-Aged Man just listening to it, but I'm going on 38 so I guess that's appropriate.

Eels' "Blinking Lights And Other Revelations" is another matter. Brilliant, biting double album with a lot of sharp edges (though perhaps fewer than some of their earlier discs). Definitely in my top four so far this year, which would read something like this:

Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production Of Eggs
M. Ward - Transistor Radio
Eels - Blinking Lights And Other Revelations
Beck - Guero

The House of Love - Gotta Be That Way
I hadn't expected them to make such a great single again! Great comeback. The Mogwai-remix on the flip is rather shit though.

Boo Radleys - Giant Steps
one of the most underrated bands of the 90s!

Stereolab - Oscillons from the anti-sun

My favourite album of 2005 so far. I saw him live last week, in Amsterdam. He was just incredible!

Blue, they just announced North American tour dates for Eels w/strings, including a stop in Toronto and one in New York :D (late June).

Also, for any Eels fans out there, they did a great set on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" yesterday:

Scroll down to recent programs, then click on "Listen" for audio or "Click Here To Watch" for video. I can't recommend this program enough. I know I've said it elsewhere, but this is a great way to hear new music. If only all radio were like this.
