Proud Mum!!

Post by Gillibeanz »

I heard a couple of days ago that my daughter Claire has got her degree in Journalism and psychology - she got a 2-1!!

I also heard that my son has passed his second years law exams at university - one more year to go before he hopefully gets his law degree!

Am I one proud mum or wot???!! :D

There's a great Yiddish term for what you're experiencing, but I can't remember how to spell/pronounce it. Sounds like "nahas" or something...

Well, joy and pride by any other name.

Bobster is thinking of the Yiddish word naches. Naches is a proud pleasure, a special joy from the achievements of a child.

It is pronounced NOCK-ess, to rhyme with 'Loch Ness'

Yes, indeed. You are less likely, however, to have schpilkas in the genecta gezoint!

Let's not forget the counterpoint to nakhes: tsuris, the special pain and disappointment that only your child can give you.

Congratulations. There is no greater thrill for me then to see my children advance and succeed. Nothing more fulfilling, and enriching to my life. You have every right to be proud of their successes, especially since their success can almost always be linked back to good parenting/guardianship.

Congratulations to them. And of equal importance, congratulations to you for the investment and energy it takes to see these successes revealed.

Actually, I thought tsuris was just generally trouble and annoyance. I tend to use it as follows:

Q: What's the matter, Bob?

A: Oh nothing, my boss is just giving me a lot tsuris today.
