Elvis Soldiers On
From the beginning of the concert it was clear that EC was having problems with the voice. It was a bit hoarse. Then in Clubland his guitar/amp was humming very badly, like a cable was not ok, and at the end of the song, while still playing he tried to kick over the amp a couple of times with his boots, and when the song was over he threw down the guitar on the amp, and he ran off stage, with the band following him.

Some minutes later he went back on stage, only with Steve Nieve, and he played two songs with him on piano, and by now his voice was almost completely gone...some words never left his mouth...only hoarse croaks. But miracuously he continued, and song by song he managed to sing better and better, and by the end of the show his voice had bettered a lot. Way to go EC!

ELVIS COSTELLO

16 giugno 2005
MUSIC VILLAGE (MODENA)

What is not known never well that to attend from Elvis Costello, for via of its approach much staff and of a repertorio by now sconfinato. Seeing to go up it on the punctual theater box, with as well as about jacket and necktie, in a distinguished context like that one of the Music Village, composed, measured show is believed to one, to one lesson of music with some concession to the rock' n' roll. The public seats tidily and, also not filling up at all all the space to disposition, he follows with attention the artist who on the theater box indeed has the mastery and the competence of a university professor.

Nevertheless I stud demonstrates endured not to want itself to save and, supported from its Imposters, series of numbers attacks inanellando one rock. The impact frontal but is elaborated: Elvis public square often beyond the spies to play the guitar electrical worker, while the band it insists on the structure of pieces, thanks to the contribution of Steve Nieve to the keyboards, that it succeeds in to widen the phantom of the sound with a theremin. The songs are ollowed without pause and without it placed: also when it proposes some brani of the last disc, I stud offers public to the only some look and a lot, much music. The sound is constructed on a rock' n' roll continuously varied: "Bedlam" and "Needle Time" are two imbastarditi blows and mestizos, but the first carried out point of is "concluded Chelsea" with a series of detaches directed to the stomach and continuation from one "Clubland" that sfocia in one citation of "Insensatez" of Jobim.

Band the sound in worthy excellent way of the frame and the organization of the Mu-Vi and Costello seems amused, to the point that begins launch some smile provoking towards the public. To emphasize like, beyond that of the song, make cargo of all the parts of guitar with the irregular aid of a processore, soiling its chitarrismo twang of r&r, of swing, of country and blues to second of the occasions. Quite it succeeds in to sing a back of "All this useless beauty" in Italian, but, al.di.là.del cameo, they too much astonish the interpretations that, above all in pieces discs of a valve, they produce of the parts from brivido, supplendo also some tremito. Exemplary are in so far as "Almost blue", sung like a crooner, and "When the was cruel", executed in one version more blues, nearly threatening. The public scalda like if the all, also less assiduous, percepissero the sfaccettata personality of the artist and Stud exchange again, confirming the own particularitity also on that they are its historical pieces: "Watching the detectives" is continuation to wheel from "The delivery man" and "The butcher boy" before that the festivity has beginning with a medley of sends back to rock' n' roll years ' 50 that culminate in "Pump it up". To this point, when the set seems concluded by now, I stud it is loaded ulteriorly, absorbing the energy produced from the its same music and sforna "Alison" in medley with "Suspicious minds" in order then launch itself in a long "Peace, love and understanding" with continuous reprise on the end. Not still I am satiated, offers to a "God give me strength" that for sure backs sound like a salute to Pavarotti, than it is here of house. Then other number of rock' n' roll and the definitive closing with one "Scarlet tide" in the balance between country and the folk pulls outside from the cylinder some Irish: after beyond two hours of concert, I stud has the courage to propose part of the piece single guitar and voice, without not even the aid of the microphone, like last and extreme offer to the present ones. Indeed one great lesson of music.

He obviously enjoys singing the latter in Italia so he can sing 'tutta questa bellezza inutile' and show off (as referred to above: 'Quite it succeeds in to sing a back of "All this useless beauty" in Italian'!). Maybe Italy reminds him of the LP. Some other nice and unexpected inclusions on these dates such as Shabby Doll and Green Shirt. shame we've never had an Italian visitor, given the reputation he enjoys there.

I think that All This Useless Beauty was about an experience he had in Italy.

I remember he even sang it like that in Rome, in front of an audience of half million people, during the yearly Labour Day gig.

He mentions that gig in the Extreme Honey liner notes, or one of those greatest hits.
