Re: Painted From Memory
Amazing album but it is deceptive at first, the album when it was first listened to was boring and elevator music sort of. But the album is like wine, better with time. The more you listen to it and consider the lyrics and the songs as a whole, it is an amazing album (This House Is Empty Now is fantastic regardless of what others say) so I think it's a great addition perhaps not on a Spike or Punch The Clock level but still amazing. Can anyone tell me why everyone loves Get Happy!! except for me lol ?
It's not the days when you leave me, but all I fear are the nights.

One of my favourite Elvis album's certainly in my top 6 or 7. Apart from liking the music events around the record, getting in touch with some family I hadn't seen in a while helped. So it does have good memories for me.
I thought it could have been a bigger hit in the UK. It seemed to get next to no airplay even thought it contains some radio friendly tracks.

Re: Painted From Memory
There must be something about Burt and the Irish. Ronan Keating's "comeback" album is to be a "collaboration" with Burt Bacharach. This does not involve any song writing, but Burt has worked with Ronan on the recording of the album. One of the ten tracks is "This House Is Empty Now". Read more here:

Universal will release 'When Ronan Met Burt' on April 8. Order your copy now (or not).

Re: Painted From Memory
Ronan feckin' Keating mightn't be as bad as my OTT reaction earlier dreads ; this promo video includes a comment that each song had a hour and a half in the recording sessions -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Et3NQkp2f4
and there's this -
http://www.ronankeating.com/news.php?item=224
Burt said of the process, ‘To do these songs with a different slant and approach on them made it very interesting for me. And too be able to work with Ronan and expose these songs to maybe a younger audience as well as my fan base. Then to be able to record it in the legendary Capitol recording studio - full orchestra live. Quite a trip we were on Ronan.’
Lets hold of until the tracks are heard and it should be a bit of kerching for Elvis.

There's a snippet of Ronan's version here:

Sounds like his usual barked delivery manages to quell all the longing needed for this song.

Re: Painted From Memory
Ooh, apparently Ronan's Bacharach album is number 5 in the charts. Good news for Elvis - a few trickled royalties at last!
I want Michael Buble to cover Voice in the Dark next.

Re: Painted From Memory
PFM is a fine record, my faves being "I still Have That Other Girl", "This House Is Empty Now" and "God Give Me Strength".
The record is a collaboration but clearly Bacharach influenced, the reverse just wouldn't have worked.
The live tracks are a great addition to the album, so is the the instrumental album "The Sweetest Punch".
Also worthy of hunting down is the "Royal Festival Hall" concert from 1998.

Here's the whole song. He makes it sound easier than Elvis does, actually.

Re: Painted From Memory
If anyone can ever post the 1998 Letterman appearance where EC & Burt performed "I Still Have That Other Girl"-- my recollection is that this was a particularly strong performance, but I've never seen it since its original broadcast...
Re: Painted From Memory
Credit where credits due - all these clips from the 1990's are from Dirk in Germany. He recently had his videos transferred to DVD, sent me a copy, I sent copies to Doc and here they all are now on youTube. Besides the musical content its fascinating to see the whole Elvis/Bruce interaction considering what we now know about the tensions that were in the backround. And those Italian interview segments.....priceless! Thanks Dirk!

Interview: Burt Bacharach
(extract)
MM: But weren’t you hearing things that elude most people?
BB: Not really. The average listener hears more than you think. I don’t really want to be in a recording situation with someone who can’t sing. For example, we got the maximum out of Ronan Keating earlier this year [When Ronan Met Burt]. There are some really good tracks in there. He’s such a pro. We had an hour and a half for each track, and he pulled it off. I met him for the first time on a Monday morning, and he was gone that Saturday. And that made you work in a different way [snaps]. My favorite track on that album is This House Is Empty Now.
MM: Your album with Elvis Costello, Painted From Memory, remains a brilliant work.
BB: Yes, it really is something, isn’t it? [pause] I love what we did.

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach Painted from Memory Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Strictly Limited to 3000 Numbered Copies on Mobile Fidelity
Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach first collaborated on "God Give Me Strength," a sweeping ballad that functioned as the centerpiece in Allison Anders' Grace of My Heart. It was a stunning song in the tradition of Bacharach's classic '60s work and it was successful enough that the composers decided to collaborate on a full album, Painted from Memory. Wisely, they chose to work within the stylistic parameters of Bacharach's '60s material, but Painted from Memory never sounds like a stylistic exercise. Instead, it's a return to form for both artists. Bacharach hasn't written such graceful, powerful melodies since his glory days, and Costello hasn't crafted such a fully realized album since King of America. It's a testament to both that even if the album is clearly in Bacharach's territory, it feels like a genuine collaboration. Often, the music not only evokes the spirit of Dionne Warwick, it's reminiscent of Elvis' torching ballads for Trust. Costello keeps Bacharach from his schmaltzier tendencies, and Bacharach keeps Costello from overwriting. With its lush arrangements, sighing brass and strings, gentle pianos, and backing vocals, it's clearly a classicist album, yet it sounds utterly timeless. Its melodies are immediate, its emotions subtle, its impact lasting -- and, with that timeless sound, Painted from Memory illustrates that craft cannot only be its own reward, it can be genuinely moving.
