Australia continues its lengthy love affair when Elvis Costello as the acclaimed singer-songwriter returns to Australia in April 2014 bringing with him The Imposters. Costello for a long time has been a favoured son of Australia having toured here around dozen times since the late 70’s.

Costello’s will play just two headline shows in Adelaide on Thursday 17th April at the Thebarton Theatre and Sydney’s State Theatre on Wednesday 23rd April. These shows run alongside his already announced festival appearances at Deni Blues & Roots in Deniliquin and Byron Bay’s Bluesfest.

ELVIS COSTELLO has followed his musical curiosity in a career spanning almost four decades with a back catalogue of over 40 albums covering nearly every genre of music. He is probably best known for his performances with The Attractions, The Imposters and his solo shows with pianist Steve Nieve. More recently he gate crashed his own horizons by collaborating with The Roots, producing Wise Up Ghost, one of this years finest musical offerings.

Elvis and The Imposters (Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher) will present an incredible night of entertainment taking audiences through the Costello musical encyclopedia refresher course with a selection of songs from the past, present and future.

I have secured front row seats via a contact working for the Ticket agency.

Really excited about this one as eldest son ( 14 ) is attending with us for his first ever EC concert !

Just wondering if there is a chance of this and Sydney being a Spinning Song Book show as the pasword for the pre sale was "Spinning " ??

I have a feeling ( and I hope I am so wrong ) that this concert is in danger of cancellation as you can still get tickets for Row "L" stalls even now ! The Circle and Dress circle are not available for purchase either. Adelaide does have a history of not adequately supporting some acts hence the reason why many omit the City from the tours downunder or add extra Melbourne or Sydney shows with the confidence that they will sell.

The comparison with the sales for the other ( non festival ) Australian side show in Sydney is quite telling.

Fingers crossed for a late surge or heavy promotional work.

It is with regret that Chugg Entertainment today confirms that Elvis Costello & The Imposters' Adelaide date at the Thebarton Theatre on the Thursday 17th April, will no longer be going ahead. Less than anticipated ticket sales have unfortunately made it impossible to proceed.

"To all our friends in Adelaide.
It seems you are too few in number for our show at the Thebarton Theatre to go ahead.
We regret any inconvenience and disappointment caused . We are sorry not to be visiting your fair city and state, as the opportunities to do so in the future may not be numerous.
So long, it's been good to know you."

Elvis Costello cancels Adelaide gig, fans blame poor promotion

ANGRY music fans weren't in the mood for peace, love or understanding after English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello this week cancelled his Adelaide gig, citing poor ticket sales and a lack of interest.

Costello was to play Thebarton Theatre, with his band The Imposters on April 17, but yesterday posted a slightly miffed message on his Facebook page to announce the gig was off and hinting fans may have missed their chance to see him play here anytime soon.

"To all our friends in Adelaide," the message read.

"It seems you are too few in number for our show at the Thebarton Theatre to go ahead.

"We regret any inconvenience and disappointment caused.

"We are sorry not to be visiting your fair city and state, as the opportunities to do so in the future may not be numerous.

"So long, it's been good to know you. Elvis Costello and the Imposters".

Tour promoter Chugg Entertainment also released a statement saying "less than anticipated ticket sales have unfortunately made it impossible to proceed".

An extra Melbourne show has been added on the same date Costello was due to play here.

Fans expressed their disappointment on Costello's Facebook page, with some chastising Adelaide fans for failing to support the show.

"Ouch. Poor form Adelaide," Megan Williamson, wrote.

"Too terrible! Elvis is the best," Sarah Walters commented.

But many others blamed poor promotion, saying they'd seen little or no advertising of the show.

"No advertising. I would have gone had I known," Judith Nickels wrote.

"Your promoter stinks," Luke Moore wrote. "No one knew about it".

In a statement, promoter Michael Chugg told advertiser.com.au said the decision to cancel was "very difficult".

"We hate cancelling shows," Mr Chugg said.

"It's disappointing for the artist and for the fans, but sometimes it's a commercial reality which we must face.

"We'd love to see the passionate comments from Adelaide's music fans convert into sales.

"As I'm sure other promoters would agree, it's often a tough market to sell tickets in, but we always try and make it work."

Meanwhile, Costello's wife, Canadian jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall, will play the Adelaide Festival Theatre, on February 8 as part of an Australian tour.

Thanks for your sympathy Sulky.

I have seen EC aplenty over the years but it was the prospect of Dad and Son seeing him together for the first time that made this event so special.

I owe it to him to investigate feasability of the Melbourne option now at least.
