ReadyToHearTheWorst constructed some excellent compilations for my listening pleasure; the two disc "Ready to Hear The Last - 2006 'Blue Chair' Edition" along with a Richard Thompson compilation.

Here are the tracklists for the various artists mixes:

Disc 1:

1. Cast - "History"
2. Flying Burrito Brothers - "Christine's Tune"
3. Beach Boys - "She Knows Me Too Well"
4. Larrikin Love - "Edwould"
5. Nick Lowe - "From Now On"
6. Richard Thompson & Jackshit - "Mingulay Boat Song"
7. Aretha Franklin - "The House That Jack Built"
8. Ash - "Kung Fu"
9. Diana Krall - "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
10. XTC - "Life Begins At The Hop"
11. B-52s - "Roam"
12. Eric Clapton - "Edge of Darkness"
13. Lindisfarne - "Clear White Light"
14. French Frith Kaiser & Thompson - Loch Lomond
15. Nick Cave - "Into My Arms"
16. Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance - "One For The Road"
17. Gogol Bordello - "Star Wearing Purple"
18. Reparata and the Delrons - "I'm Nobody's Baby Now"
19. The Cure- "A Forest"
20. The Tyla Gang - "Styrofoam"
21. Lovin' Spoonful - "Younger Generation"

Disc 2:

1. Richard & Linda Thompson - "Saturday Rollin' Around"
2. Billy Preston - "Billy's Bag"
3. Steve Earle - "I Thought You Should Know"
4. Bjork - "Play Dead"
5. Betty Wright - "Clean Up Woman"
6. John Martyn - "Certain Surprise"
7. Donald Fagen - "Walk Between Raindrops"
8. Buddy Holly - "You're The One"
9. Sandy Denny - "I'm A Dreamer"
10. Kenji Kawai - "Kugutsuuta ura mite chiru"
11. The Detroit Cobras - "I Wanna Holler (But the City's Too Small)"
12. James Carr - "Love Attack"
13. The Jesus and Mary Chain - "April Skies"
14. The Monkees - "Valleri"
15. Ella Fitzgerald - "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered"
16. Neil Young - "Cinnamon Girl"
17. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - "Mona Lisa"
18. Christine Collister & Ricahrd Thompson - "My Time"
19. The Upsetters - "Return of Django"
20. Don McLean - "Everybody Loves Me, Baby"
21. Neville Brothers - "With God On Our Side"

Remarkably well done by ReadyToHearTheWorst. I own a lot of music, but beyond the Flying Burrito Brothers, B-52's, Lovin' Spoonful and Neil Young tracks I was not familiar with a single one of these recordings. The Betty Wright track is an early standout, but there is a lot to discover within these discs.

Thanks!!!

(mood swung, your CD will be on its way very soon, I apologize for the hold-up!)

I got ice's two-disc extravaganza today. He's decided not to provide a track list so that I can try to figure it out myself, but will let me know later.

Will give 'em a spin tonight. Thanks ice!

Mine are on their way to BWAP as we speak.

At least I have some idea of your tastes now, RTHTW. Seeing that list of songs is resulting in at least two changes. Won't be long now.

George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers - Ride On Josephine
John Prine - Please Don't Bury Me
G.Love & Special Sauce - Astronaut
Hepcat - Riding the Region
Transplants - Gangsters & Thugs
Jimmy Buffett - God's Own Drunk
Jack Johnson - Bubble Toes
Nick Lowe - I Got The Love
Lucinda Williams - Get Right With God
Rancid - Crane Fist
Robbie Fulks - Fountains Of Wayne Hotline
The Pietasters - Can't Stand It
G.Love & Special Sauce - 1-76
Jimmy Buffett - Tin Cup Chalice
Transplants - DJ DJ
John Prine - Onomatopoeia
The Reverend Horton Heat - Livin' On The Edge

I've been meaning to check out Lucinda Williams, this was a nice introduction besides her appearance on TDM. Quite alot of artists here that seem worth checking out :) . Thanks, mood swung!

Received Who Shot Sam's discs early last week and was able to listen to them in the rental car while on holiday last weekend/early this week - good stuff - no clunkers - I had nothing on disc one and a few of the songs on disc two - but these served us well - especially like the Pernice Brothers and Richard Swift; and really glad that Sam included "Joy" by Betty LaVette - love having the originals of songs I know by others. Nice artwork as well!

ice nine was kind enough to send me two CDs chock full of goodies. I've only been able to spend time with Disc 1 so far and mean to get to Disc 2 in earnest this weekend, when I have some major driving to do. Here are a few of my impressions of Disc 1 and a track listing for Disc 2. ice asked me to guess at the tracks for Disc 1 and I was able to get most of them. Lots of great stuff in here an I love having all this live material...

Disc 1 (all Live):

1. Joe Jackson - "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" - Cool doo-wop vibe. Brings back memories. I had a lot of his albums when I was younger but hardly hear his stuff anymore.

2. Steve Earle - "State Trooper" - Springsteen cover. First time I'd heard it and I like it a lot - big and burly, unlike the original, which is more spare and haunting.

3. Beth Orton - "Concrete Sky" - I only figured out the song by looking around a bit. I don't have Daybreaker, the album this song comes from, so that's why I didn't know this one, but I picked out the voice. Really lovely performance.

4. Marillion - "Freaks" - This one I didn't know. Very proggy. Not my bag, I'm afraid.

5. EC - Backstabbers - Great horns. Dig it. PTC bonus disc, which I have, but still welcome.

6. Leonard Cohen - "Dance Me to the End of Love" - I really like the Greek vibe of this live version.

7. Louis Armstrong - "Mack the Knife" - From the Newport Jazz Festival. What can you say? Majestic trumpet intro and the guy could flat out sing, even with his froggy voice.

8. Bonnie Raitt and John Prine - "Angel from Montgomery" - Live in Chicago 1985. Really terrific duet, and a great great song. Her voice is smashing.

9. Michael Hedges - "Come Together" - Beatles cover. Nice version, but I couldn't put my finger on who it was.

10. Counting Crows - "Mr. Jones" - I like it more in this live context than on the album, but I'm not a huge fan. From Live from Mountain Stage, ice informs me.

11) Ray Charles - "Makin' Whoopee" - Incredible piano. Really deep in that New Orleans vibe. This is the real shit! I thought it was Dr. John - doh!

12) Bob Marley - "Jammin'" - From Babylon by Bus. Incredible groove and he really soars on this one. How much fun would it have been to attend one of their live shows?

13) Joan Osborne - "Ladder" - From Lillith Fair. I guessed correctly on this one, but did not know the song. Very Janis Joplin-ish. Nice.

14) Marshall Crenshaw - "Cynical Girl" - A great blast from the past. Terrific pop song with smart lyrics. Really brings back some memories. Another cut from Live from Mountain Stage.

15) Rockpile - "They Called It Rock" - I don't have a ton of Nick Lowe's live stuff - this is pretty swingin'. From the Rockpile Seconds of Pleasure bonus disc, via chrille.

16) Psychedelic Furs - "Only You and I" - I knew Richard Butler's voice, but not the song. You'd recognize that voice anywhere. I heard him sing recently on the radio and his voice is just totally shot now - not that it was ever the world's greatest instrument.

17) Joe Jackson - "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" - Same song, totally different arrangement. A cool way to bookend the disc. I liked both arrangements, this one certainly less elaborate.

Disc 2 - I don't have any of this, so there's a lot to discover...

1. Breath - Alexi Murdoch
2. The Poet Game - Ani DiFranco
3. The Mountain - Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer
4. The River's Gonna Run - Buddy & Julie Miller
5. It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go - Nanci Griffith
6. I'm From New Jersey - John Gorka
7. Spirit Wind - David Wilcox
8. People Get Ready - Eva Cassidy
9. Two Little Feet - Karen Savoca
10. Amy's Eyes - Shaun Mullins
11. Heroes - Jill Sobule
12. Fascist Architecture - Bruce Cockburn
13. I've Got Just About Everything - Tuck & Patty
14. Caroline, No - Elliot Easton
15. Rocket Man - Kate Bush
16. Cowboy Mouth - Joe Strummer
17. Bali Bali - Angélique Kidjo
18. Immobile - Autour de Lucie (Thanks to Ms. BA)
19. John The Revelator - Dirty Dozen Brass Band
20. Perridon Two Step - Amanda Shaw

Thanks again ice! A really thoughtful selection and lots of wonderful music in here.

BWAP, the Richard Swift tune I included was "Half Lit". He's supposed to have a new, long-delayed album coming out in early 2007. Susanna and the Magical Orchestra did that AC/DC cover - must have been cut off on the track listing.

I stand corrected. When Lucinda played this in London a couple of weeks ago she referenced the Betty LaVette version and said that her bassist played it on LaVette's record...it was one of the songs that Springsteen played on at the show and it was in my head that this was an older song.

The Pietasters! To be pronounced 'pea-et-asters' perchance, kind of like a portmanteau of Pieta and alabaster?
um, no.

Got mine from Blue Saturday. Thanks! I was initially a little intimidated when I was matched up with him, thinking 'oh dear lord, I'll get a history of modern music, Part One' (not that that would be a bad thing!), and my first listen kind of had me clueless and lost, but only because I didn't realize that the player was on shuffle! But I have to say, this is some good shit! Some (a very very few) I knew and lots I didn't. Thanks much, Blue.

disc one

That's How I Got To Memphis - Solomon Burke. Wow. Just wow.
(Don't Go Back To) Rockville - R.E.M.
Daniel and the Sacred Harp - the Band
Living Proof - Cat Power
Devil's Right Hand - Johnny Cash. got to be from something recent because my dad never played this.
Bottle of Blues - Beck (holding hands with an impotent dream - that is my life in 6 words)
Ms. November - The Bees
My Winding Wheel - Ryan Adams
Heavy Metal Drummer - Wilco
Picture Book - The Kinks.
Bisbee Blue - Calexico
Something To Talk About - Badly Drawn Boy
Waltz #2 - Elliott Smith
Best Of All Possible Worlds - The Little Willies. My favorite as of today.
Until You Came Along - Golden Smog
How Am I Different - Bettye Lavette. Neato bandito! She should do more of AM's songs.
Carolina - Josh Rouse
I Believe She's Lying - Jon Brion
Mi Amour - Allen Toussaint

disco dos

There Is An End - The Greenhornes feat. Holly Golightly
Been Caught Stealing - Jacksoul. I remember the Jane's A(????) video. Very cool.
Don't Know Why I Love You - the Rolling Stones
Stop, Look and Listen - Belle & Sebastian
They Are Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From The Dead!! Ahhhh!! - Sufjan Stevens. He knows os? har har. Love this. He has a Christmas album? It will be a tough choice between that and Billy Idol's.
Sad, Sad Song - M. Ward.
Fill My Empty Cup - David Celia
Kathleen - Josh Ritter.
Opposite Day - Andrew Bird
Young Pilgrims - The Shins
The Town That Lost Its Groove Supply - The Minus 5
From Bakersfield To Saigon - Anne McCue
The Perfect Crime #2 - The Decemberists
Real Light - The Jayhawks
Rise Up With Fists!!! - Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins. I went to school with them.
Kamera - Wilco
Imaginary Friends - Ron Sexsmith. I'm trying not to take that personally.

I am enjoying this immensely. Thanks again, BC.

My pleasure, moody... glad it made it there safely.

The Johnny Cash song is fairly recent. It's a Steve Earle cover that appeared on that Unearthed box set a few years back.

You know I have a sense of humour! Actually, I half wish that is the setlist I sent. Would have been less predictable than the usual blend of Scritti, Lloyd, Durutti and favourites from The Word sampler CDs to convince recipients that my tastes and collection are at least 1/10th as varied as WSS's, Blue's, Mike Boom's et al's! And how predictable was the Tower of CD? I ask you!

Otis sent me two CDs. One was a compilation of Ron Sexsmith which I took to work today and listened to it there. It was busy at work so I only heard pieces of it as I passed through the stockroom. Sounded great. The second CD is as follows:

You Only Live Twice - The Strokes
The Dress Looks Nice On You - Sufjan
Sweetness - Lloyd Cole & Commotions
The Art Teacher - Rufus Wainwright
I Found A Reason - Cat Power
Never Known - Durutti Column
On The Streets - Morrissey
Anyone - Joan As Police Woman
In Between Days - Ben Folds
Brandenburg - Beirut
Erdi - Ali Farka Touré
I Walk Alone - Bob Mason
On The Radio - Regina Spektor
Idaho - Nerina Pallot
Shine So Bright - Teddy Thompson
Faithless - Scritti Politti
My Other Life - Lloyd Cole
Who Are You - Tom Waits
Emily - Joanna Newsome

Coincidently, I just ordered Ys not knowing if I would enjoy it or not. Enough people here seem to like it so it's a good gamble. Thanks to Otis I now know I'll enjoy it.

I want to thank everyone involved in this circle. I hope everybody got their CD(s) by now. I hope it broadened your musical tastes.

Oh yes. Opens the new LP, which is a collection of four EPs as one LP.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Supersunnyspeed ... F8&s=music

Always loved the song, and this is a great, lively version. If you go to this link on the incredible site Hype Machine and scroll down to Oct 20 and hit Listen, you can hear it! The marvels of technology, eh? If you want someone to hear something, especially if it's newish, but not necessarily, this site is a godsend. And so nice to check stuff out. Read about someone I'd never heard of in the Word reviews, James Holden, a maths lecturer at Oxford/electronicameister. V postitive review of The Idots Are Winning. Checked out hype, some v nice samples. It's so easy.

The Doofy Monksters vast stash came today. Wowzeroo! 5 CDs. Is this much allowed? And it all seems fabulous. And I suspect the Doof found time the day he visited Westinghouse Towers to compile a listing of every song I have on CD (or he's re-read all 4,000+ of my posts VERY carefully!) as I don't believe he's duplicated a single one. Must show my collecton is very limited as this is all class. He's a man of taste and refinement. Likes a song with a good tune, a bit of emotion (the big, old softie), a bit of engagement in the words, and occasionally some downright silliness (Monty Python's 'Penis Song' - well this is the man who named his Fantasy team the Veiny Love Tubes). Lots of people I know and love the bits I know of, but haven't explored properly. Two CDs are a Roddy Frame comp, with a couple of Aztec tracks from Knife an LP I've never heard, then most of North Star, all of Surf (lovely) and all of the new one, Western Skies. Plus some obscure b-sides, including one that isn't even listed on the seemingly comprehensive Killermont St site (Love Has Been Good To Me - found a ref in Japanese on a Japanese site, so am none the wiser!). Roddy is one of those people I adored as a 16 year old, the third of the holy triumvirate of Postcard bands, and like Scritti, someone I discovered, I believe, as a result of the legendary NME C81 compilation. Saw them live twice in the 80s, but have never followed his career since, but do know some of these songs, e.g. the lovely Surf title track, from a very good bootleg of Roddy with Edwyn at the Queen Elizabeth Hall some 4 years ago (which I tried to give Storm in NY recently, realising I'd actually got it from him in the first place - doh! i thought it was another Dime item).

I'll have to list here. Give me a week or so! For some reason, even though the tracklists are printed with iTunes, PC iT doesn't seem to be compatible with iT Mac, playlistwise (and iT Mac, at least, is veryy poor in exporting the tracklisting, unless there's a trick I'm missing). So far, so fantastic. I hadn't heard The Jags' Back of my Hand in a VERY long time, but know it backwards. Real Costello copiers. Absurd, fake American accents. The 22 minute title track of Paddy McAloon's first solo LP I Trawl The Megahertz is bizarre, but likeable. Spoken voice from a female American actress.

Jenny Lewis sounds good. Jellyfish, who I'd never heard of, several tracks. Niiice.

Received a generous package from BWAP a few weeks ago and I wanted to comment in more detail but kept feeling really out of depth given the specific genres and also just overwhelmed with the sheer volume of songs and artists that are new to me and that I've been trying to get up to speed with. I'm still working on that. Besides the mixes below he also sent me some Camper Van Beethoven and The Cramps and a disc with the Almost Blue originals so I've been pretty chuffed.

BWAP mix Disc 1

1. Plane Wreck At Los Gatos (Deportee) - Los Super Seven
2. El Canelo - Los Lobos
3. One Time One Night - Los Lobos
4. Fourth Of July - Dave Alvin
5. Border Radio - Dave Alvin
6. Marie Marie - The Blasters
7. Texas Tornado - Doug Sahm
8. Stoned Faces Don't Lie - Sir Douglas Quintet
9. Mendocino - Sir Douglas Quintet
10. Our Little Angel - Roseanne Cash
11. Carmelita - Warren Zevon
12. Reunion (with Lucinda Williams) - Jimmy Dale Gilmore
13. You Don't Have Far To Go - Lucinda Williams
14. Keys To Your Heart - The 101ers
15. Jack On Fire - The Gun Club
16. Nothing In Return - Rory Erickson
17. If You Have Ghosts - Rory Erickson
18. Thrice All American - Neko Case
19. Lost Cause - Beck
20. High Fidelity - Bob Mould (not the EC song)
21. I Can't Get You Off Of My Mind - Bob Dylan (not the Kylie Minogue song)
22. Tell It To The Judge On Sunday - The Long Ryders
23. Once Over Twice - X

The only ones I was already familiar with from disc 1 were Lost Cause, Carmelita, If You Have Ghosts (from King Hoarse's mix cd), and Our Little Angel (KOA vers only). It's a fairly laid back mix and I'm digging a lot of these tracks. About the only exception is Jimmy Dale Gilmore's voice which I find just too annoyingly maudlin. A lot of these are currently in the 'reasonably interesting' basket, they sound pretty good but I get the feeling that I might appreciate them more as I acquire more of a taste for them. I find the Neko Case and Lucinda songs great (and they both sound hot) and I'm also already keen on the Bob Mould, Rory Erickson, Dave Alvin (& The Blasters), The Long Ryders, and X (I know someone who'd rave about X, I'll ask her to dig some out now. I recall Los Angeles, that's about it). The Bob Dylan one, a Hank Williams number, I read, I suspect was rather butchered having put on a HW compilation I have called 40 Greatest Hits. It's not on there, but still that's the impression I get. I wish it had been a cover of the Kylie number!

A lot of punkrockish type bands here. I already knew of and liked some Replacements, Social Distortion, Iggy Pop, The Fall, Gang Of Four, and Joe Strummer but only really in The Clash. But not these songs, except 5'1", I think. The only one by those I didn't really like was the one by The Fall. I've also heard the Frank Black song somewhere and it's pretty good, I'd been curious to hear more of him since His Kingly Cave had grown on me. The other stuff I find quite likeable already is the stuff by: Ian Dury, Sugar, The Jim Carroll Band, The Only Ones, The Members, and The Real Kids. The rest, I mostly found pretty hard to relate to in very meaningful ways, especially, I think, not having grown up with them and their music scenes. Still, I enjoyed certain things about them listening to them for their own sake - certainly more refreshing than listening to their derivative imitators on the radio today.

A reggae mix. Great stuff all round, am enjoying this A LOT. Just the thing to chill out with after listening to more intense stuff, like punkrock. Have heard a few of these but not many (for a couple just covers of them, by The Clash and Boney M). I'd checked out Israelites recently, downloaded it after Desmond Dekker's passing and reading about him. This is great, have already been spinning this for friends! And it should be a good education to read up on all these and make some of the connections.

Thanks, BWAP!
