Normal Happiness and the free accompanying Moon Live CD - both awesome - the first half of Normal Happiness especially is all pop greatness - will take time to absorb the whole thing. "Boxing About" is the sort of pop song Elvis used to be so great at writing.

Joanna Newsom, Emily, from Ys. Courtesy of the Hype Machine, of course. This LP has had the most glowing reviews I've seen in ages. Alexis Petridis: 'this CD will change your life'. Observer, Observer Music Monthly, The Word. My usual sources. All raving. She does sound amazing. Voice is arresting, can see why people relate her to Anthony and Johnsons, but the music is far more elaborate. She's a harpist, Van Dyke Parks arranges, and Steve Albini produces. One to buy on the strength of reviews and see if it does the same for you. Ys is a submerged Breton city, the Breton Atlantis, if you will. 'Eees'

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Really very very good. I wasn't sure what to expect now that they've signed to Capitol, but this does not disappoint. The two versions of "The Crane Wife", "Shankill Butchers", "O, Valencia!" and "The Perfect Crime #2" are probably my favorite cuts. It gets a little big proggy with "The Island" (reminds me of their EP, The Tain), but happily so.

And it ain't in the shops till Monday! Recommended?
Came home last night to find the babysitter watching him on Later. Sadly I had to walk her home, so missed out. Damien Rice too. Hurried back for a minute of boring Kasabian (what is the fuss about there, I wonder?). Pisses me off the way Later doesn't have a regular repeat slot (or have I misssed that).

A quality online establishment of independent origins posted it early enough for it to arrive today. Got the gatefold vinyl edition that comes with a bonus 7" of 'Running The World'. I'd heard it a few times before, but gave it some decent attention this morning. Seems pretty good. Perhaps not as knockout great as the increasingly excitable Petridis suggested yesterday, but there's some really strong stuff on it. Anyone who was a Pulp fan will find plenty to like, but I don't imagine any new converts will be grabbed.Otis Westinghouse wrote:And it ain't in the shops till Monday! Recommended?

Indeed. I love that album. It was one of my increasingly large pile of records discovered thanks to Mark Lamarr's excellent Friday night / Saturday morning show on BBC Radio 2. Not sure if the internet streams can be accessed outside of the UK anymore, but recommended listening for all.Who Shot Sam? wrote:
Unashamedly retro soul - the best possible kind. Me and the missus will be seeing James and his band in Troy, New York a week from Saturday.

Radio 2's Mike Harding did an hour of Richard Thompson covers, complete with comments from the man himself, last night.
Some magical stuff, including the Del McCoury Band doing a Bluegrass take on 52 Vincent Black Lightening and our very own's End of the Rainbow.
RT said that EC has great taste, writes 27 songs a week, is an important artist, and so it's an honour for him to do one of his songs.
Should be available for a week here

I had forgotten how great Tommy is, way way ahead of its time. Really excited about seeing the Who tomorrow night.

A copy of this arrived from the record label yesterday and it is blowing my mind so far. Definitely showcases Waits' scope as a songwriter and performer, and is much more thoroughly enjoyable than Real Gone, which I found ultimately lacked something.
It comes out next Tuesday, so I encourage all Waits fans to grab a copy! At the very least, give it an important slot on your X-Mas wishlists!
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Wait, Waits new album is not a compilation of outtakes and such? I was intending to get that eventually, but if this is all new material I must get it soon. I had forgotten about this upcoming Waits-release alltogether, so thanks for the reminder.
Currently listening to this:
Not enjoying it as much as Paris 1919, but there are several great songs here. Seems like there's alot of CDs of his that are worth getting according to allmusic.com, but is there anyone who could help me out in deciding which album to get next?
