I was about to say 'you have to be British to get it', but Mug shows it ain't so. There's an immense poetry to the LP. Not for nothing has he been described as the Shakespeare of the clubbing generation. The poetry of talking about sitting on the sofa 'roachin' a spliff' and so forth. I love the delivery, the way he over-elaborates on gaps between syllables. And as Mug says, the music is great. Blinded By The Lights is a great example, you can feel your stomach grind to it, so vivid is the sense of place. Elvis is a fan, you know, though he reckoned it wasn't an LP he'd listen to after 6 months, which is what struck me playing it again: it is an LP I'll want to return far down the line.
There's more to life than books, you know, but not much more
