Best of 2005

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Shucks, Foyle the John, and here I thought I was the only person raving about her. It's great stuff, no?

I like the FARTYs, but they kept us to a mere five albums, which is a little tough this year, given the abundance of great music. Here are the 20 albums I've listened to a lot this year, in no particluar order:

Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Eels - Blinking Lights And Other Revelations
Richmond Fontaine - The Fitzgerald
Josh Rouse - Nashville
The National - Alligator
Band Of Bees - Free The Bees
Nouvelle Vague - Nouvelle Vague
Doves - Some Cities
Martha Wainwright - Martha Wainwright
Sigur Rós - Takk...
Richard Swift - The Novelist/Walking Without Effort
Pernice Brothers - Discover A Lovelier You
M. Ward - Transistor Radio
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better
Frank Black - Honeycomb
The Clientele - Strange Geometry
Andrew Bird - Andrew Bird & The Mysterious Production Of Eggs
Beck - Guero
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Naturally

Fave Reissue - Talking Heads "Brick" Box Set

Man, even that's hard.

My Top 14 (random order) :

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better
The Clientele - Strange Geometry
M. Ward - Transistor Radio
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Bright Eyes - Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
The Magic Numbers -The Magic Numbers
The Go-Betweens - Oceans Apart
Echo & the Bunnymen - Siberia
Jens Lekman – Oh, You’re So Silent, Jens
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Paul McCartney – Chaos & Creation In The Backyard
Josh Rouse – Nashville

I haven’t heard a couple of much-revered albums by the likes of Decemberists, Richard Hawley, Elbow, Eels, Antony & the Johnsons, or Martha Wainwright, some of which, I suppose, could find their place in my TOP 20.

My music listening since I got an mp3 player has become hopelessly fragmented due to my putting it on random just about all the time. A fair few of the albums listed here so far are on my player and sound great. One 2005 album that sticks out every time a track pops up is Gavin Bryars Oi Me Lasso. Hearing a track from this after a Nine Black Alps track is truly an arresting experience.

OMM's top 50. Elbow only 69, but it;s a pretty good list. Good year for music, no? Haven't heard Anthony & the Johnsons, so can't comment. Would like to hear all of Gorillaz. When's my son gonna spend his pocket money on it? Good ranking for Sufjan. Site also contains listeners' top 50 (better showing for Elbow), and top 10 songs of the year, none of which I know!
