Rivers of Babylon has been stuck in my head lately. I made a playlist of all the different versions Napster has of it, from the Melodians to Steve Earle to Sublime to the freakin' Gaither family. Melodians and Sublime be my favorites.
The Lordz cover People Who Died on The Brooklyn Way. Great song.
I salute you, brother!

Like me, the "g" is silent.

Found some more The Only Ones songs here -- http://soundofthesuburb.blogspot.com . Pretty cool, especially Why Don't You Kill Yourself?
I just gave the The Real Kids song (Do The Boob) another listen, I'm really liking their style. They play loose (tight n' loose, ifyaknowwhatimean) and it sounds like they're just spewing out the words but it's smart stuff.

At last, found the time to post a review of BambooNeedle's excellent mix. I'm still living with it, and haven't played the 2nd disc as much yet, but this is what is on my lucky player:
Disc 1 - all Aussie mix
1. Here Comes A City - The Go-Betweens - rocking opener
2. Twenty Years - Something For Kate
3. Better Off Alone - Grinspoon
4. Ocean Of You - The Blackeyed Susans
5. No Aphrodisiac - The Whitlams - lovely
6. Heaven Tonight - John Waters
7. Cigarettes Will Kill You - Ben Lee
8. Human On The Inside - The Divinyls - covered by Pretenders
9. Save What You Can - The Triffids
10. The Sound Of White - Missy Higgins - excellent, and always good to hear 'regional' accents rather than fake American (Mick Jagger, that means you!)
11. So Young - Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons - covered by EC (who doesn't seem to have changed anything, either in the arrangement or voice)
12. You've Got Nothing I Want - Cold Chisel - good old, no nonsense, rocker
13. Till There Was You - Janet Seidel yes, the one also covered by The Beatles
14. 1000 Miles Away - Hoodoo Gurus
15. In Case We Die pts. 1-4 - Architecture In Helsinki
16. Along The Run - Art Of Fighting
17. True Blue - John Williamson - very Australian
18. Bail Me Out - Pete Murray
19. Beautiful Waste - The Triffids
20. How To Make Gravy - Paul Kelly - sings a fine recipe
Disc 2.
1. Homeward Strut [instr.] - Tommy Bolin Band - excellent
2. Wild Wild Life - Wailing Souls - ditto
3. Going Under - Patti Smith
4. Keys To Your Love - The Rolling Stones
5. Mysteries Of The Unexplained - Tanya Donelly
6. Empire In My Mind - The Wallflowers
7. Memory Lane - Elliott Smith
8. Talkin' Hard Luck Blues - Woody Guthrie
9. Had Me A Girl - Tom Waits
10. County Fair - Bruce Springsteen
11. Bury Me Deep In Love - The Triffids
12. Shakey Ground - The Temptations - how'd I ever miss this slice of funky stuff?
13. Wheels Of Fortune - The Doobie Brothers - liked these lads back in the day, but this one doesn't grab me, i'm afraid
14. Gypsy Soul - Tommy Bolin Band
15. Make That Money (Scrooge's Song) - Alice Cooper
16. A Change Is Gonna Come - Terence Trent D'Arby; Booker T & The MGs - hell of a pair of lungs that lad
17. The Ladies Who Lunch - Ute Lemper
18. Dealer - Deep Purple
Overall, a very good & broad mix. Knew little of the artists on the 1st disc (never mind the songs), and plenty of new (to me at least) and interesting stuff on the 2nd.
Thank'ee kindly Boo. Love these circles.

What do you think of Dealer? I was revisiting some Tommy Bolin as I compiled this mix and was reminded again of his guitar work on it (it's all him). I can't hear it enough times, I'm sure I've been driving my neighbour nuts.

Any overdubs? or does he actually play 2 guitars at the same time?bambooneedle wrote:What do you think of Dealer? I was revisiting some Tommy Bolin as I compiled this mix and was reminded again of his guitar work on it (it's all him).
He's certainly busier, and more inventive/expressive, than Mr Blackmore ever was. Great loss.
