Looks as if I will be "home" and may be able to go now, seems show is far from sold out so may wait and try and get a better seat via stub hub.

Was thinking this will be the last night of the tour, I was at the Police Hollywood Bowl show which was the last night and Elvis performed at the El Rey that evening inviting the audience in his Bowl set to come to the show...I can live in hope!

Steely Dan, Elvis Costello concert in West Palm Beach

Steely Dan and Elvis Costello. Not a double bill that fans were expecting to see on a concert tour. But they have a lot in common — specifically a musical sophistication that crosses genre borders, from rock to pop to jazz. Costello and the Dan duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are also master lyric writers — densely literate, intelligent, experimental, and a little snarly/snarky/snotty at times.

Sometimes, their story lines cross over in intriguing ways.


Not that we’re expecting to see them perform together Wednesday at The Amphitheatre Formerly Known As Coral Sky (now Perfect Vodka, which is going to take a little getting used to). But since this is the last night of their joint summer tour, we wish they’d consider this kind of back-and-forth song pairing.

Call it a Steely Elvis mashup playlist:

HEY NINETEEN/MYSTERY DANCE: Two songs about dancing as metaphor. In Steely Dan’s “Hey Nineteen,” the older protagonist knows he has nothing in common with a younger woman. After all, how can he communicate with someone who doesn’t realize that Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul? “No we can’t dance together,” he tells her. “No, we can’t talk at all.” In Elvis’ “Mystery Dance,” definitely a contender for one of the greatest revved-up rockers clocking in under two minutes, a young Romeo begs his Juliet to indoctrinate him into the tango of love. He’s having some trouble, though, and like many early Costello songs that could be viewed as both personal and political, he’s angry, scared and more than a little frustrated: “Why don’t you tell me ‘bout the mystery dance?” he demands. “I wanna know about the mystery dance. Why don’t you show me ‘cause I’ve tried and I’ve tried and I’m still mystified …”


RADIO RADIO/FM: Two very different looks at late nights on the radio dial. In Elvis’ “Radio, Radio,” the instrument has the potential to be a “sound salvation” but it’s getting too commercialized and stagnant: “And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools,” he sings. “Tryin’ to anesthetize the way that you feel.” In the Dan’s “FM,” that anesthesia is the perfect backdrop for a night of grapefruit wine-fueled seduction, with an irresistible playlist of “nothin’ but blues and Elvis and somebody else’s favorite song.” No static at all, indeed.

ALLISON/RIKKI, DON’T LOSE THAT NUMBER: Two songs about losing the woman you desire. In Costello’s spiky “Allison,” he’s upset that his romantic fixation has spurned him, slept with others and then gotten married, when he only wants what’s right for her: “My aim is true,” he swears. In reality, he’s sexist, disrespectful and bitter and his aim is full of murderous intent, which makes it ironic that many people view this as a love song. (People make the same mistake with the Police’s “Every Breath You Take.”) On “Rikki,” while some interpret the “number” as a joint and with Becker and Fagen you can never be quite sure, they take a more soft-focus approach to lost love. The singer is hoping that Rikki will keep his digits and call if she changes her mind. But since he seems to want only one thing — escorting her on a drive along a street ominously named “Slow Hand Row” or staying inside to play some undefined “games” — my guess is that Rikki wises up and deletes that number real quick.

This set list is accurate.

The horn section was 3 pieces. I also assume they were from Steely Dan. (I didn't stay for the Dan show.) They appeared halfway through PLU.

I thought EC would feel constrained by one-hour opening-act slot, but it seemed to me he was more like, "You know, I could get used to these part-time hours." :D

The weather started blustering just at the very end of EC's set. Fifteen minutes later, just as I'd gotten to my car to head home, it started pouring buckets. Sorry, Dan fans.

I hope Possession and Brilliant Mistake make it to YouTube. I love the version with Tangled up in blue.

It looks like Elvis really enjoyed this tour.

CONCERT REVIEW: STEELY DAN, ELVIS COSTELLO CLOSE OUT TOUR AT PERFECT VODKA

Last night, Steely Dan’s 23-date U.S. tour closed out in style at the Perfect Vodka Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach. As is often the case, though, Florida’s bipolar weather nearly ruined everything at just the wrong time.


The legendary pop outfit brought along a very special guest in Elvis Costello and his band, the Imposters. Costello opened for Steely Dan, but in truth, this was a double-headliner treat for music fans. Although it took some time to fill both the seats and the lawn, it wasn’t long before the entire amphitheater was bulging with baby-boomer dance fiends (and even some of their kids.)

Costello, clad in a monochrome gangster outfit suitable for either a foggy night out in his native London or a cigar bar in Miami, barreled through his greatest hits, including spirited versions of “Oliver’s Army,” “Watching the Detectives,” and “Everyday I Write the Book.” Every so often, Costello dug deep into his catalog, sending waves of shimmying, rousing rock through the venue. A master lyricist and guitar pop poet, Costello bid the crowd adieu with his double-entrendre-laden hit “Pump It Up” and his famous cover of Nick Lowe’s song “(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding.”

Near the end of Costello’s set, a menacing thunderstorm crept up from behind the palm trees. The massive and ominous system threatened to wreck the evening, just as Steely Dan’s roadies were setting up. Thankfully, after a few weak drizzles, the show went on as the clouds whimpered away while Steely Dan triumphantly did not.

The dynamic songwriting duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen brought to life their signature feel-good sound with the help of a small musical army. It was a sophisticated blend of jazz, traditional pop, blues, and R&B buoyed by melodic hooks and complex harmonies.

Assisting them to establish their '70s groove was a plethora of stellar musicians. Between the sax solos, the horn solos, the trumpet solos, the drum breakdowns, and the three-part harmonies — courtesy of a trio of lovely backup singers — Steely Dan ensured that every player onstage was both literally and figuratively in the spotlight.

As they’re known to do in their concerts, Becker and Fagen allowed the music to explore the space, extending four- or five-minute studio tracks into freewheeling jam-band adventures. Caring only about providing a breezy, fun experience for their fans, they melted hearts and moved butts with songs like “Show Biz Kids” and “Peg.”


Perhaps the two biggest highlights came near the finale, when they ended the “regular” show with their bluesy 1973 hit “Reelin in the Years” and followed it up with the jazz-fusion classic "Kid Charlemagne." Each song must have transported many at Perfect Vodka back in time to those hazy days of long happy trips of the chemical variety. However, thanks to solid performances by Elvis Costello and Steely Dan, two artists who have never lost their cool, those same fans went home with a new set of blissful memories.

I'd love to know if there's a backstory with this little surprise. I was too far back to tell if EC was surprised or not, and I didn't even realize they were standing there until I looked at Steve to see what bag o tricks he was using to make those horn sounds.

Maybe it was all arranged by Steve, and arranged by Steve. Or maybe it was at the suggestion of one of the horn players (maybe as an implied audition/suggestion for a future tour -- yes please).

In any case, as far as I could tell, when the show concluded two minutes later (and with The Imposters already introduced during Chelsea), there was no more talking from EC, so no real opportunity for him to mention or thank the horn section.

Azmuda, I was up close and I didn't notice EC looking surprised, but I didn't see the horn section come on stage, either. They were just there, blasting away, all the sudden. Very cool. I always love EC's music arranged for/with horns.

I think EC might have pre-thanked them during "Chelsea". He went through a long list of thank-yous and I couldn't understand everything he said. (BTW, I don't know if you caught it, but "Frank and Dexter" got a thank-you shout-out.)

Hopefully we'll get some more video and/or audio on this.

A tour with a horn section would be an expensive show to put on and economically I don't think it would be viable.

But I'd love to see one! Elvis has a lot more material since 1983 that he could add horns to.

For me the tours with the tko and crescent city horns were some of the best and most memorable shows

There is always the hot as a pistol DVD, even though it's only most of the show!
