Tower of Song 2000-2008

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Tower of Song 2000-2008

Post by cosmos »

Equally inspired by MBA's "Great bands since 2003" thread, Mr. Westinghouse's tirade at his Tower of Song selection being "elbowed" out at the last minute, and my own lack of knowledge of a lot of new music out there, this is a scaled-down version of the Tower of Song (hope it's okay with you, Blue :D ).

Obviously, the songs here must have been recorded/released between 2000-2008. Reissues don't count. I like the odd number of 9 songs, so we'll keep that. My initial list may be quite laughable - I'm not too up on things these days.

How Do I Let a Good Man Down? - Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
Truth - Todd Rundgren
Answering Bell - Ryan Adams
High Water (For Charley Patton) - Bob Dylan
Back to Black - Amy Winehouse
Bright Idea - Orson
Valerie - The Zutons
Prairie Wind - Neil Young
51 Phantom - North Mississippi All-Stars

And lastly, before knocking out something you've never heard before, take a couple of minutes and at least listen to a sample of it. You might be surprised. The whole point of these kinds of threads (for me) is to be enlightened by you people! 8)

Don't like Ryan much but youtubed the track and found it not too bad. Didn't like the 30 second sample of the NMAS track on Amazon though.

In: Strasbourg - The Rakes

I really like most things on this list. I'm going to let Todd go, although its a good song. Let's show some love for one of the best bands of this millenium: Gnarls Barkley.

Just a Thought - Gnarls Barkley
Answering Bell - Ryan Adams
High Water (For Charley Patton) - Bob Dylan

Good to see the return of the obligatory Bob Dylan song (OBDS), cosmos.

Out: Amy Winehouse
In: One of my best new discoveries of recent years, Grandaddy. If they (1992-2006, though who knows talented songwriter mainman Jason Lytle could reform them at some point) were newer I might have put them in Miss Buenos Aires' 'best since 2003 bands' because I think they're pretty great. Elliott Smith thought so as well, they toured around together a bit and would share the stage sometimes.

Wikipedia describes them thus: "Musically, the band features guitars (both in the indie rock style and in a fashion calling Jeff Lynne to mind), keyboards reminiscent of Philip Glass's minimalist style and vocals in the key of Neil Young. The band's musical style (somewhat classifiable as indietronic) often combines experimental electronic sounds with elements of folk and rock. Lyrics generally focus on isolation in a high-tech world grafted onto rural America. Common themes in the band's music are wildlife, obsolete technology, robots, incompetency and heartbreak".

The Crystal Lake is from 2000. cool video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-5BrWb_iUs

Valerie - The Zutons

http://plagueofangels.blogspot.com/2008 ... -2006.html - the song appears here, with a few others.
http://www.captainsdead.com/2007/09/08/ ... e-dolphins - amazingly, this site's post from last September still has a live show from '03 (it says '02 but it's '03) incl. a good performance of it.

Ryan Adams doesn't quite do it for me. Arcade Fire are an obvious choice, but they so do it for me:

How Do I Let a Good Man Down? - Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
Just a Thought - Gnarls Barkley
My Body Is A Cage - Arcade Fire
High Water (For Charley Patton) - Bob Dylan
The Crystal Lake - Grandaddy
Jesus, Etc. - Wilco
Valerie - The Zutons
Prairie Wind - Neil Young
Strasbourg - The Rakes

I think we can do without OBDS.

The fantastic Solomon Burke comes in.

First I was going take off Grandaddy - but then I remembered the rules and checked them out - and I really liked that song - and then I was going take off old Neil, but that was a good song too - then I checked out the Arcade Fire song - I guess it's ok - but it's not moving me - so

English Chelsea Fan - this is your last game!

How Do I Let a Good Man Down? - Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
Just a Thought - Gnarls Barkley
Theme From Sparta FC - The Fall
None of Us Are Free - Solomon Burke
The Crystal Lake - Grandaddy
Jesus, Etc. - Wilco
Valerie - The Zutons
Prairie Wind - Neil Young
Strasbourg - The Rakes

Everyone just needs to fuckin’ relax. Smoke more weed, the world is ending.

Is that the latest incarnation or going back a few years? Apart from the missus, they're all different to when I saw them a while back, I think.

Great choice of song, but bummer of a choice that led to its inclusion...

This is the lineup from a year ago (maybe a year and half) - it's mostly changed now except for his wife Elena. This lineup was substantially different from the lineup you would have seen two or three years ago. The band you saw quit during a US tour and he recruited 3 americans (drummer, guitarist and bassist you see here) - mid tour - not dates cancelled - cut an album with them - toured the UK and Europe and then sacked them and now he's hired a new group - toured the UK and recorded an album.
