Looking for Pathway Studio

Post by johnfoyle »

On my latest wander down the Elvis Costello Heritage Trail I went , last Wednes. Aug.6 '08, to Islington, London to look for Pathway Studio , site of Elvis recording sessions , starting with MAIT in 1976.

On the 'sick days' Elvis took from the 'Vanity Factory' , Elvis would most likely have traveled by train , it being the most direct route from Acton, south London. Getting of at Canonbury Station , he would take a left down Grosvenor Avenue -

No.76 is on the corner so it's a bit of a trek until you get to No.2 -

2 b is the basement -

2a is then down a lane -

There isn't a studio there anymore ; it seems to be a private residence.

There's a tyre changing store after it -

There's a flat to rent on that corner -

Staff , all immigrants, of local shops had no memories of users of the studio. It's hard to equate the location with a recording studio. The normalcy is similar to other Costello related locations in Whitton, Berkinhead and Kensington. Cliche as it is , it makes his desperation to get away all the more understandable.

John

I think you're mad but I am really glad you do things like this. Have you ever done Elvis: the Dublin Years?

Elvis spent his Dublin years in the arsehole of suburbia. I'd rather eat cold sick than go to Stepaside, a scary place full of people in golf sweaters who drive 4X4s. Or else he was on the road to the airport.

Otherwise I've recorded other Dublin/Costello related sites in my adventures with my MAIT glass -

There is a documentary on Sky Arts1 which is repeated regularly called Guitar Stories: Mark Knopfler. Mark and Dire Straits bassist John Illsey go back to Pathway recalling the early days of the band. Their first radio exposure was when they had their demo played by Charlie Gillett so there are some connections with EC.
