Costello classical refs
So, the keyboard break in The Only Flame in Town is a direct steal from JS Bach's Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring (OK, that's a Nieve ref rather than EC):
And I've always been reminded of 19th C hymn, much sung in my schooldays, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind in the 'But the high hell that he used to be has been ground down' line from Man Out of Time:
Curiously, the keyboard line at the end of the 'shellac of Chopin' line on Other End of the Telescope sounds like it ought to be a ref, but I can't relate it to anything, and I do know Chopin pretty well. Any suggestions (I have a feeling we discussed this in March 2004 or something).
Steve N is probably quoting Rachmaninov and Liszt and god knows who else in various places, but my list seems to end here.
Any takers? Any Mahler moments, WSS?
Have we had this theme before?

Well, OK. I have this awesome torrent of a show in Southampton, NY from the Useless Beauty release....
He references Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" as part of "Poor Fractured Atlas" and "The German National Anthem" as part of "Little Atoms"...

On the UK tour with the Brodskys a couple of years ago, he included a snippet fromt he welsh hymn "All Through The Night" and Neil mentioned a hymn his mum recognised but I've forgotten what that was - sorry
Steve used to put all sorts of references into song, "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring" has certainly appeared in I Want You on more than one occasion

What is the piano bit amidst all the cacophony in Button My Lip? I forget the name of it.

No idea. Will give it a go.
Gnossiennes in WIWC 2 sounds familiar, can't quite recall.
Poor Fractured Atlas opens with a bit of Moonlight Sonata, but does this bootleg feature additional bits of it?
All good and interesting stuff to check out.

Re: Costello classical refs
Indeed. Clearer still at 2'50.
I would happily define West Side Story as classical, especially if it's the recording with Kiri Te Kanawa et al.
