Two shows for Michigan fans this year! Never heard of Interlochen, but it appears to be in the vicinity of Grand Rapids, Milwaukee and Green Bay.

Day 3: Interlochen Writer's Retreat

Katey Schultz

Mini-lectures on the craft of nonfiction. A fine poetry reading. A thrilling novel reading. A craft lecture on 3rd person narration. A rockin’ concert at Interlochen’s Kresge Auditorium, where I got to see Elvis Costello & the Imposters from 10th row seats (thank you, faculty discount!). What a truly rich and full day!

Costello had a gigantic song-wheel up on stage (maybe thirty feet tall) and these go-go dancer girls in platform shoes who grabbed people from the audience to spin the wheel, which determined what song would be played next. The band played for about two hours, effectively nonstop. For the last 40 minutes, 80% of the audience was on their feet, with perhaps 100 folks slammed up against the edge of the stage, bouncing and twitching to the beats.

It often takes permission through something transcendent like a poetry reading or a live concert for me to acknowledge the transition I’ve gone through. In the screaming darkness of the crowd, I think I finally realized that I am in Michigan. On East Coast Time. About to teach teenagers for 6 weeks (part time). And very, very far from the Wallowa Mountains. I already miss them, and their people. I left messages for a few pals this afternoon—telling Eric about how I got a new bike seat, telling S about the lack of wheat-free homebrews. I don’t know if they’ll call back or even if I’ll see them ever again.

But I reached out. I tried. As Walt Whitman wrote, I sent out “filament after filament.” This is what I do now. This is part of life on the road. And sitting their watching Costello’s entire body vibrate with his art, infusing the crowd of thousands—ten-year-olds to seventy-year-olds—I had to admit that the road life can be pretty good to some artists. That some people make a life of it forever, so that home becomes movement and movement becomes second nature. And so of course, when “Pump It Up” came belting over the speakers in that telltale, sandpaper, distinct voice of his, I had only one thing to do: get up and dance.

Wow, quite the range in age at this concert. Road Life.. hmm... interesting, yeah, let the good times roll. How about trying the rogue life? Why not? Add a bit of adventure and, I'd say, a departure from the Wallowa mtn. life... The schmaltz is to much for me. Can't stand it. Sunshine and lollilops - MOJO

Very docile crowd. My rant is the mix was terrible and this is from someone who doesn't usually notice and something was just not right. I watched them all playing their hearts out but only the quieter numbers truly showed their skill. Larking Poe was was great, kinda alternative bluegrass. I might consider sampling more of their stuff. EC's voice might have suffered a bit by the Detroit show but being able to see EC so close to home I couldn't pass it up. I have heard of Interlochen but had never been to a show here. The girls (go-go and spin assistant) helping out were awesome. There was also another proposal staged and EC was happy to comply.

I just wish I had more evidence of him talking of the summer solstice. Someone howled in the audience and he mentioned something of the like "I was thinking the same thing." He also made a comment of having hairy palms during this time which a few around me also caught and we had a good laugh.

He also told an anecdote of previewing his video for the "Other side of summer" to the WB execs and one of them saying "What's with the beard?"

I was surprised it was pretty filled and the crowd became more enthusiastic and a few adventurous ventured to the front of the stage and all were pretty much standing by encore. They mostly knew the old stuff which met with audible approval but respectable audience non the less. I figured it was going to be a lite show but I was happy hearing New Lace Sleeves and Larkin Poe's help during the encore was a treat since I was unable to see the Sugarcane's last tour.

I did notice some people taking cell phone shots and possibly clips, so those should surface in time. I thought I would scan these to share for those who were unable to attend the shows.

Larkin Poe's YouTube channel has a snippet of EC and the Lovell sisters rehearsing "The Scarlet Tide," a bit of EC singing "Some Other Guy"(!), and some more traditional concert footage.
