Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp, more to perform at TJ Martell Gala

Posted on March 3, 2013 by Staff

Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges and rock greats Elvis Costello and John Mellencamp are among the stars set to take stage at the T.J. Martell Foundation’s fifth annual Nashville Honors Gala on March 10.

The invitation-only gala — held at the Hutton Hotel and hosted by “Nashville” star Charles Esten — will salute four noteworthy figures: music producer T Bone Burnett, country star Vince Gill, Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau President Butch Spyridon and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center volunteer Peggy Joyce.

Costello and Mellencamp will perform in tribute to Burnett, who has produced projects for both artists. He also produced and contributed to the soundtrack of Bridges’ film “Crazy Heart;” the actor/musician will present Burnett with the Tony Martell Lifetime Entertainment Achievement Award.

Gill will be honored by two surprise performers, and wife Amy Grant will present him with the Frances Williams Preston Lifetime Music Industry Award. Nashville hit songwriters Tim Nichols, Brett James and Rivers Rutherford are also scheduled to perform.

The T.J. Martell Foundation funds medical research with a focus on finding cures for leukemia, cancer and AIDS.

Vince Gill Saluted at T.J. Martell Honors Gala

It was another of those magical "only in Nashville" nights as Vince Gill, producer T Bone Burnett and others were saluted in song at the fifth annual T.J. Martell Honors Gala, Sunday night (March 10), at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville. The evening brought together such luminaries as Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges, John Mellencamp, rock titan Elvis Costello, stars of the Nashville TV series Charles Esten and Clare Bowen and top songwriters Tim Nichols and Aaron Barker.

All paid tribute to Vince, T Bone and their fellow honorees, who were being recognized for their charitable works and contributions to the Nashville community. The event, which included live and silent auctions, helped benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation, a leading center for cancer, leukemia and AIDS research.

Charles Esten, who served as host for the evening, introduced Vince by referring to his recent appearance on Nashville. "As an actor," Charles joked, "he's a great singer and musician." Vince received the Frances Williams Preston Lifetime Music Industry Award, presented to him by his wife, Amy Grant. Vince's daughter Jenny honored her dad with a moving performance of Vince's hit "Whenever You Come Around." An emotional Vince noted that the award was a "bittersweet" one, as he recalled the late former head of BMI, Frances Preston, for whom the award is named. "I was crazy about Frances," said Vince, explaining that she was an early champion of his songwriting. "I graciously accept this award with a tender heart."

The stars rolled out to pay tribute to T Bone, the eclectic producer and music archivist who produced the groundbreaking soundtrack album O Brother, Where Art Thou? and has collaborated with such artists as John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello and Alison Krauss. Actor Jeff Bridges, who worked with T Bone on the film Crazy Heart, for which Jeff won an Oscar, introduced his friend to the stage. In honoring T Bone, John Mellencamp performed his classic "Pink Houses," which had the audience singing and clapping along, while Elvis Costello closed the evening with "Sulphur to Sugarcane," which he wrote with T Bone, and other selections.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

Review at http://www.nashvillescene.com which suggests, interestingly, that The Secret Sisters were originally due to perform with Elvis on "The Scarlet Tide" but that they had to pull out. Clare Bowen was a second choice, but seemed to fit the bill.

"No, the above clip of Elvis Costello dueting with Clare Bowen is not a behind-the-scenes Nashville clip bootlegged on an HD potato. But it certainly felt like a scene from everybody’s favorite Music City-centric prime-time drama last night at the Hutton Hotel, where the show’s stars along with celebs the likes of Costello, Amy Grant, John Mellencamp and Jeff Bridges celebrated venerated record producer T Bone Burnett, Vince Gill, Nashville Convention and Vistors Bureau President and CEO Butch Spyridon and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center’s Peggy Joice at the 2013 T.J. Martell Foundation Honors Gala.

Backed by double-bassist Dennis Crouch and uber-fiddler Stuart Duncan, Costello closed out the evening with a four-song set of Burnett-produced cuts including “King of America,” the old-timey ditty “A Slow Drag With Josephine” and the playfully immodest “Sulfur to Sugarcane.” At the 11th-hour suggestion of Burnett, Bowen joined Napoleon Dynamite for a rendition of the Oscar-nominated, Costello-penned Cold Mountain OST gem “The Scarlet Tide” (originally sung by Alison Krauss). The Secret Sisters were originally slated to accompany Costello, but a last-minute scheduling conflict or travel woe (or something of the sort) forced them to cancel.

Though “The Scarlet Tide” in part shares its moniker with Bowen’s Nashville character Scarlett O’Connor, the Australian actor-singer very much appeared as herself, sharing a poignant anecdote about how an experimental treatment saved her life after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer just after her fourth birthday. “I don’t talk about this,” an emotional Bowen interjected before stressing the importance of the leukemia, cancer and AIDS research The T.J. Martell Foundation fund-raises for. Burnett received the foundation’s Tony Martell Lifetime Entertainment Achievement Award,

“My life has been, like, the most benevolent episode of The Twilight Zone,” Burnett said in his acceptance speech. “[Costello] taught me the beautiful carelessness of art,” Burnett went on to say. The famed producer — who also serves as Nashville's executive music producer — had equally kind, eloquent words for Music City itself.

“Recorded music has been [America’s] best goodwill ambassador,” he said, praising Nashville (the city) as the last fertile line of defense for American music. “We are losing our culture. Thank you [Nashville] for fighting the good fight."

In true Americana spirit, John Mellencamp also honored Burnett with performances of the rarely played “Save Some Time To Dream” (at Burnett’s request) and his blue-collar anthem “Pink Houses,” that had the black-tie crowd clapping along over coffee and dessert. In his speech to present the award, Jeff Bridges — Burnett helmed the music behind The Big Lebowski and Crazy Heart — called T Bone “The Music Whisperer” and “The Willy Wonka of Music, coming up with new flavors for our ears.”

Receiving the foundation’s Frances Williams Preston Lifetime Music Industry Award, Vince Gill affably reflected on his days playing “Stand by Your” man at an L.A. gay bar (called The Rawhide!) as a struggling songwriter, being the first white guy to ever appear on the cover of Jet Magazine and, to Bridges’ amusement, taking his then 15-year-old daughter Jenny Gill — who also performed at the event — to see The Big Lebowski: “the most uncomfortable two hours of my life,” he joked.

Gill’s ever-wholesome better half, Amy Grant, presented her husband with the award and got the chuckle-worthy applause line of the night when she praised bluesman Keb’ Mo’s Gill-honoring, Dobro-boasting performance of “Government Cheese.” “We made fantastic married love to [Keb’s] music,” Grant said, recalling her and Gill’s honeymoon. Last night was the couple’s 13th wedding anniversary. (Congrats, Vince and Amy!)

More shocking than Amy Grant joking about her sex life, host Charles “Chip” Esten (who y’all know as Nashville’s Deacon) spent much of the evening trying to live down a slight slip of the tongue after he misspoke and accidentally referred to honoree Butch Spyridon as “Bitch” Spyridon."

I also love the quote from T Bone Burnett, from his acceptance speech where he said (reportedly), " [Costello] taught me the beautiful carelessness of art". Something there for us all to reflect on I think.....

Side Note: Great hat! It has a 30s look with the tall straight sided crown plus moderate (around 2 3/8 inches) brim width. Most modern stingy brim hats have short tapered crowns and tiny brims (under 2 inches). I think this latest one is a winner and most likely custom made. I am pretty sure EC would know what I am talking about. :)

Thanks! I mostly collect vintage German and Austrian made hats.

http://germanaustrianhats.invisionzone.com/

The finest ones are my old Austrian and German Velours like this 1930s J. Hückel´s Söhne Zephyr Seal Velour. By the way Seal Velour is not made from Seal fur. The felt finish has the appearance of wet Seal fur. You will not find felt like this today or hats made of this quality.

Interview with Clare Bowen includes:
Earlier this year I saw you sing with Elvis Costello at charity benefit in a hotel ballroom. Was it intimidating to sing with him?

That blew my mind! I was like, "don't screw up, don't screw up, don't screw up," but Elvis is one of the most laid-back dudes that I've ever met. He's wonderful. It was a huge honor. And to sing a song that T Bone and him wrote together, that was really special.

Yeah, whose idea was it for the two of you to sing "The Scarlet Tide"?

Oh, T Bone and Elvis probably schemed that one, I would think.
